IH 504 Tractor repair

I just bought an international 504- 1942 tractor. I am new to owning a tractor and it has a few problems. It has a front end loader, but the lift on the left side shoots hydraulic fluid out of the front and the back of the hydraulic cylinder. Is this something I can fix myself or is it better to take it to a mechanic? I am pretty mechanical, but I don t have hydraulic experience or specialized tools.

They were made from 61 through 64, so much newer. Cylinders can be tricky, With special tools or abilities they are OK but if not taking the cylinder to a hydraulic shop is best. Lower it to the ground, then shut it off and then work the lift lever back and forth to assure no pressure before removing hoses. Jim

Just happened to be looking in the McCormick archives today for the month of manufacturing of our 1965 504. List shows the 504s were made through 1967.

First thing you need to do is pinpoint where the fluid is coming from. Is it coming from the cylinder, or is it coming from the hydraulic hoses?

When you said the fluid is coming from both ends of the cylinder, that leads me to believe you have some rotten hydraulic hoses that need replaced. Cylinders generally leak around where the rod comes out of the tube.

There is also a possibility that the cylinder is physically damaged, so look to make sure the fluid is coming from broken hoses, and not cracks in the cylinder tube itself.

Hoses you can replace yourself if you can turn a wrench. You just need to take the old hose off, take it to a hydraulic shop, and have them make you a new hose.
