(quoted from post at 14:39:50 03/25/23) Can a magneto that is for a 6 volt tractor get burn up from being jumped with a 12 volt jumper?

Thx
've never heard of a way to attach a magneto to an engine's starting system, but someone should be along to call me a moron any minute.

If it really is a magneto the answer is no - its not connected in anyway to the battery. If its a distributor you might be able to but it won't take long to burn up the points and maybe other stuff. Not sure
what a 12 volt jump will do to a6 volt charging system. If its a magneto you could just tow it to start it or use a hand crank if you have one.

a mag. generates its own power, no need for a battery. if for some what ever reason you did hook to 12 volts i am sure it would be done. the
mag is a separate unit form the starter and in no way connected. what tractor is this on?

Are you working with your 2N Ford?

To get accurate help you will need to tell the group EXACTLY what you are working with/asking about.

IF you are working with your 2N, which ignition system does it actually have, the first photo shows a DISTRIBUTOR, (which it is most likely to have), the second photo shows a MAGNETO that can be used in place of the battery ignition system in the first photo.

To YOUR question given such little information: Can a magneto that is for a 6 volt tractor get burn up
from being jumped with a 12 volt jumper?

NOOOOOOOO provided its actually a Magneto ?????? As they have no connection to battery power since they
generate their own energy.

HOWEVER if it were a 6 Volt battery powered coil distributor ignition and 12 volts was applied GIVEN LONG
ENOUGH TIME the coil may well overheat and possibly be toast

HOWEVER if it were a Magneto and you applied battery voltage to its Kill Switch circuitry and it had a
current path THE COIL MAY BE FRIED

To better answer your wide open question we need to know what ignition system you have BUT THE ABOVE
THEORY IS STILL BASICALLY TRUE

Let the Ford guys know what you have provided you have a Ford ??????
