We all hope for a long productive life, key word being productive. I have been very slowly losing weight for a year and a half and I am now down about 25 lbs, and am able to be more productive. I recently turned 70 and I am very healthy except for a fair amount of arthritis, especially in my hips and lower spine. Losing weight is not easy, but it is very important to have a good BMI in order to be active and enjoy our later years. We all know that excessive sugar and overweight causes a host of problems, such as type 2 diabetes and various joint problems, and more recently research has found a direct correlation between high blood sugar and Alzheimers. I urge everyone to get their blood sugar checked and if elevated to reduce their sugar intake. Skinny guys often have high blood sugar too. Live to ENJOY retirement!!

Skinny guys often have high blood sugar ? I never heard that one, but the "facts" seem to change on a daily basis. I am 67 and eat whatever
I want. 138 lbs. and my blood sugar is fine. I have no idea what "BMI" is and do not care enough to look it up. One day coffee will kill me
and the next day it will help me live another 10 years. Same for drinking wine. Much is a crap shoot as far as I can tell, I love
McDonalds double quarter pounders with cheese and bacon and eat a lot of them.

My parents were both overweight and both struggled with adult-onset diabetes. At that time, they were told to lose weight, certainly not
stay fat. I also had a young female cousin who at age 22, was advised by a MD to take up smoking cigarettes to keep her diabetes in check.

JDEM, I know that you left NY. Do you ever get back to VT? In thinking about this post I had planned to include an expectation of responses of "constantly changing facts" about diet, and what helps you to be healthier. We know that there exceptions to the rules, but we also know that seatbelts and smoke detectors save lives, despite the fact that a seatbelt can cause you to drown if you go off the road into water, and that smoke alarms can fail.

That seatbelt discussion is what goes on near everyday between my wife and I. I hate them and try not to wear them. SHE insists that I do.
And now with our newest car? IF I do NOT put it on - it drives me nuts with warning chimes. Even when I am off road in the deep woods.

This state is funny. No helmet law for motorcycles going 80 MPH on the highway. But I have to wear one on my little four wheeler in the
woods? Note - I break the law and DO not wear one. I DO carry one and IF I ever see a DNR cop in the woods, I hope I can get it on quick.

I took my native Michigander wife to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont once, maybe 10 years ago. I had been bragging up the Green Mountains
telling her they were even prettier then what we had in central New York. So we finally went. Ends up they were not any better. Just as
nice, yes. Funny how memories can play tricks. No question that central New York Appalachian mountains and Adirondack mountains, as well
as the Green Mountains in northern Vermont are beautiful. So are the Great Lakes here. After years of living in places where every step I
took was either up a hill or down a hill - I really like the relative flatness of this area. Plus a lot less regulation, and a lot more
unspoiled and undeveloped land and shorelines. I used to live in a little town named Albany in Vermont, not far from the Canadian border.
That is where I went to visit. The guy who used to be my boss in the sugar woods now has a road named after him and it is not the same as
it used to be. Neither am I, I guess.

Hey jdem,
Live on the wild side without the seatbelt on.
Buy a "seatbelt extender" only like $5.
Plug it in and leave it in.
The vehicle computer then thinks you are buckled up and won't chime at all.

My dad never took care of himself. He
didn't drink but smoked like a chimney and
was overweight. He died fairly young in
life. My uncle was a complete opposite.
He was active, skinny and healthy. He
lived much longer but ended his days in a
nursing home. Between the two I personally
would choose to just die fat and happy and
not have to worry about nursing homes.
Course I don't have any kids to hang around
for either.

My grandmother was overweight and had Type 2 diabetes. My father died pretty young due to liver disease. I knew I was in the risk group, but hoped for the better. Recently, I was diagnosed with diabetes, though I'm not oveweight and exercise regularly. Life is unpredictable.

The medical tech has changed so much from when I was growing up we now can define diseases and treatments we couldnt before. People just died. My folks didnt take care of themselves very well but still made it to their early 80's. I plan on making it longer so I take my medicines and go for checkups.
To each his own.

Being "fat and happy" isn't a guarantee that you'll drop dead mid-step and not end up in a nursing home. Nowadays they have ways to treat heart attacks and strokes that were often fatal decades ago. They're just debilitating, not deadly, so you end up in a home.

I'm just loving "I won the genetics lottery, and I don't have any health problems so you shouldn't either, and they got some things wrong 70+ years ago so all modern medicine is invalid, and if I haven't heard of it it doesn't exist."

Type two is not the worst medical condition ever and i am saying that from my personal experience. I just need to remember to buy victoza online , don't eat junks and sweets and do couple of workouts per week. At first this diagnose seemed like a curse and i was completely devastated. Now, couple of years after i don't think much about that anymore.

Hello vikir welcome to YT. First let me say I am sorry to hear about your health issues. I suppose you know this but maybe not. You replied to a ..Topic.. from June of 2019 so there was no current discussion on it. Due to some items that would take a rather lengthy explanation these forums have to viewing platforms called ..Classic.. and ..Modern.. Views. I am going to assume you are viewing on Modern. When an older post like this is replied to the Classic system does not always sync with Modern. So in Classic view there are 5 replies you probably are not seeing. I will place a link here at the bottom so you can view them as well. Aside from your health issues the folks here would love to hear what drew you to reply on an old tractor forum. Do you have any tractors or old farm implements? Maybe you have a rural background? Let us know with a few lines! Again welcome aboard!
