Stump Jumper

My son just bought a new one, and according to him it's an 18 inch plate mounted under the blades. He said it don't work.

If they're round they work well, the oval one on our Bush Hog not so well, the King Kutter we had previously had a round one. an oval one has a leading edge that can strike objects, like the stumps and rocks that we have. If you look at my post on March 15th in tractor talk I have a picture of it after I repaired it.

ive got a cheep who knows who built it but dangdest stump jumper ive seen on a cheepie, its got a ramp on leading edge of each blade that protects bolt heads welded to the big heavy stump jumper.
i ran over a stump on place that had the usual no obstructions story. it just jumped a tad never making lots of noise.
gave $50. for it cause it had side damage. everybody said its shot. used it 10 or so years now no trouble yet.

1000 words and all that.

A Stump Jumper is basically blade that swivels around. The blade is 2-Pieces, pivots on the center axis. Meant to swivel out of the way if an obstuction is encounterd so you don't bust the blade. Most decet bush hogs will have one.

Tim your description is that of a bush hog WITHOUT stump jumper. They are all pretty much as you describe UNLESS they have the stump jumper plate BELOW the blades

It doesn't mean much but if you have a stump almost flush with the ground the angle end on the sides of the bush hog if you position the mower with that angle on the stump it will prevent the blades from hitting it. Thing of it is if you turn the tractor the slightest little bit the mower will fall off the stump and the blades will hit anyway. Better to put a flag on the stumps and mow around them.
