High speed misses in a diesel?

I was looking at a tractor (MF 270) for sale and it ran pretty well but I noticed that at full rpm, no load, it had a slight miss. It was inconsistent and when it missed there would be a small puff of dark smoke. The tractor doesnt appear to have many hours, 2500 indicated and I dont see anything to suggest thats wrong. It looks like this tractor sat a lot. Any suggestions as to the likely cause of this miss? Thanks.

If the high speed no load stop screw is set TOO HIGH, that will cause it on a GOOD running engine sometimes. May also be simple as replacing old stale fuel, or a slight pump timing adjustment, or letting engine fully warm up as cold engines are more likely to have a high speed miss.

I had an Oliver doing that once, I revved it into the range where it would miss then tweaked the pump timing till it cleaned up.

IF you decide to buy it . I would start with changing filters and checking the vale lash. Then if not good look at putting some 2 cycle oil in the fuel for a few tank fulls. then if not solved you will need to look deeper like timing or over speed on adjustment.

Using a premium grade #2 diesel fuel in it might clean it up. Most farm coops carry it. Truck stops and convience stores are questionable if they have premium fuel. Good luck with the gal.

Ok, thanks for the excellent input. If purchased well plan on a full service, set the valves, test the injectors, some fresh fuel with lube, check the high idle speed, and if the problem persists after putting a few hours on it, check the timing.
