Im betting that happened a lot more than we think when
tractors first started being used. Farmers probably were
sceptical and kept a few horses around in case the
tractor broke. I know for myself if I didnt have more than
one tractor I would want a backup plan. We used a
tractor and stone boat to clean out the dairy barn till
1984-86. When the tractor ( the only one dad had) got
stuck in a low spot and froze in, the rest of the winter we
used the horses to pull the stone boat. Shovel on and
shovel off.

Good morning, cjunrau and others: Last time I heard the word 'stoneboat" used was probably 60 years ago, at my grandfather's farm in eastern Michigan. Time flies...

Stone boat is definitely an occupational term. I guess I
didnt think twice when I read it. In the glacial rift of
MinnesOta they were common until hydraulics and
equipment size made them a thing of the past.
