Is the starter on a D4 6U 6 or 12 volts?

Without an alternator, I am assuming the worse that will happen if I use a 12 volt on a 6, if it is a six, Id it will just spin fast, correct?

Also, there isnt an alternator on this dozer, either on the pony or the main. How did they keep the battery charged?

Thanks

The generator was gear driven off the diesel. If there is a blank-off cover where the generator used to be, my guess would be someone added electric start to the pony and just recharged the battery manually; the cover would indicate that the tractor came from the factory manual (rope) start.

6V. 12V battery will work fine. You can add an alternator with aftermarket drive to the lower right side of your engine cover if you wish. They're not cheap.

I dont want to rob You of Your post but I cant be sure of what has been done to Your unit and I agree with Frits. Here is what I did to a wood chipper. It set outside all its life and it had a Wisconsin Engine with a bad charging system so a solar panel to the rescue - worked perfect ! Roy

Hello my D6 9U's pony I start by hand if it's in good shape it should start pretty easy with the starter so a battery should last many times.

Roy's solar panel sounds like a good idea. Had to think about this for a while. The guy who made the generator conversions owned a business in Miami called CME, now called CMEARMA. There's nothing on his website indicating he still sells them, but it would be worth an inquiry. He made a cast aluminum adapter and used a Motorola 3 wire alternator, but I think a 10SI was available later. Found a picture on the web that looks like a CME unit.

its 6v but you can use a 12v battery as i do on my ponys--just don't crank it too long--i just charge the 12v every once in a while--can get a lot of starts on them without charging
