Thieves Are Targeting Ram Pickup Trucks to Steal in 2023

Just one part of the anything for a buck society we live in today. Something we never complain about if we benefit as individuals.

Sales man at a local dealership told me that they have lost two new pickups out of their yard already this year . So now they try to block the new pickups in, using used cars at night. So they have to move the used vehicles, before they can steal the new trucks. He also told me several of his customers had lost new pickups in the last 6 months.
Couldnt a power interruption switch, hidden underneath the dashboard, help to slow down the theft rate?

The trouble is the know how behind doing that reaches the thieves eventually. Most kids are not taught any ethics today and that is why this conduct is broadening versus staying quite isolated. Thieves have always been around but the activity has gone up exponentially in the last decade.

I bought a 22 RAM truck and the one feature I really dislike is the keyless entry and start. There was no key start offering, they went 100% to keyless entry and start.

Apparently there are only two different makers of the FOB and lock security systems in use and a new hacking tool avail for under $240 will unlock about 50% of keyless vehicles. RAM is one of those that is susceptible. I keep my key in a drawer in an inside room and my trailer is always hooked up to the truck, but that is still no guarantee.

There is a pouch you can buy that you can put the key
fob into. and it blocks the signal. If the fob is just in
your house, apparently the equipment the crooks have
can still catch the signal. I watched a YouTube video
and it shows how they just break in the vehicle, and
hook their tablet into the wiring of the vehicle, and
they can make a new key . You can now buy a
security system that you have to enter a PIN number
by pushing a series of presses on the buttons on your
steering wheel, before any key can be recognized to
start these vehicles. Cost about &800.00 US.

(quoted from post at 07:18:44 03/05/23) Theres a Surprising Reason Car Thieves Are Targeting Ram Pickup Trucks to Steal in 2023.

This sounds like a good reason to park your vehicles inside a garage when possible or get a ride to the airport.
131 Dodge rams stolen in Toronto in 2023
5 arrested after Dodge Ram truck stolen
All five have been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and [b:bdef409cd1]possession of an automobile master key[/b:bdef409cd1].

[b:bdef409cd1]All five have been released[/b:bdef409cd1] with conditions.

"Investigators would like to remind everyone to take extra precautions to protect your vehicle from theft," police said, "...[b:bdef409cd1]keeping your keys away[/b:bdef409cd1] from the front door of your home."
So 131 Dodge Ram trucks go missing. They catch 5 guys stealing Dodge Ram trucks using a master key, let them go and tell owners to hide their keys. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

Couldn't a power interruption switch, hidden underneath the dashboard, help to slow down the theft rate?

I would think a hidden switch could be used to kill the spark or voltage going to the starter solenoid.

Well, if someone goes putting in unapproved switches, relays or solenoids, that's gonna void the warranty for the whole vehicle. I could certainly wire up a momentary contact to a solenoid between the truck start solenoid and the starter and that would do the job.

Basically, I hold both the momentary contact under the dash, while I push the start switch. Once the engine starts, I can let go the momentary contact and the start wire is open circuit. If I need to take the truck into the dealer, I have to remove all that stuff and put it back to stock.

Risk for me is very low because I'm in a low crime area. A cheaper and faster way would be to disconnect the ground lead to the battery, but then I lose the anti theft alarm, and of course the key fob won't work to open the door and I have to use the small insert key for the door, open the hood, connect the batt, get in the truck, start the engine and away I go.

If the owners caught a few of them and shot them dead it would deter a lot of theft. Like trespassing a waste of time to catch them and have the cop there they can give them a chance to leave on their own if they do then game over. Some of them need to be just flat jailed for the day or night to think about it then just let them out no booking on the first time then if it happens again lock em up and prosecute.

Seems to me that the trucks and cars being targeted are the vehicles with the high end features, and cost over $100,00.00 . They arent necessarily targeting the average $50,000.00 truck with cloth seats, they are out after the leather seat fully loaded models . And realistically no matter what your security system, if someone wants to steal your vehicle, they will take it. A locked garage is probably your first best line of defence, but what about when you are out with your vehicle? At work, at an overnight trip and in a hotel parking lot, or even the parking lot at the local shopping mall. Seems if you have something nice, theres always a thief willing to try and steal it. Best a person can do is make it harder for them. It wasnt like our old key ignition systems were fool proof.

When I go on vacation, I pull a few choice relays and fuses and install my club with the wheels turned all the way to one side.
