Would take about ALL of the Cubs Grandpa Love has rescued hooked together to equal the power of the big one!

Seems kind of silly they cheapen these new tractors up and lighten them up in the frames and such then add all those weights in places to hold it to the ground. then you go look at those old green real Stiegers with the 1/2 inch plate frames and such needing no weights to hold them down and had from 160-460Hp in them. Those new ones will be in the junk before they get as old as these old Stiegers are. .

I tend to agree. However, if you don't need the weight all the time, removing it allows for less compaction and probably better fuel economy.

They didn't "cheapen these new tractors up" or "lighten them up in the frames" at all. That 450 Steiger weighs 36,000lbs dry.

Few if any tractors made have ever been able to put all their power to the ground without adding ballast. These tractors are no different.

Since nobody uses liquid ballast in the tires, iron ballast it is. It takes a LOT of iron to make a difference on a 36,000lb tractor.

That big trash barrel of an exhaust system is what will put the new one in the junk pile way before its time.

Neat pic, enjoy seeing it thanks for posting it.

On big tractors like that I never see the pile of weights setting around nor off the tractor since they just get used in the spring then chisel plow in the fall with them. A few get used on the grain cart now.

Barnyard is right. The old green Steigers were no different than todays tractors and needed weight to pull anything without excessive slippage.

Rite tractors and Big Buds are about the tractors Im
aware of that didnt need additional ballast. I know mine
didnt

Modern Steigers are still built with 1/2 plate frame or better. Hood is fiberglass and the roof is plastic, other than that they are all steel.

The main cause of exhausts rusting out are short drives that are not long enough to evaporate the moisture out. Not many big tractors are use to commute to the office.

I think he's talking about the DEF system, not the exhaust itself rotting out. Doesn't take but a chunk of pipe and a welder to make a straight pipe if that thing rots out.

The DEF systems can also be deleted if you are willing to learn what to do. You won't get a dealer or anyone professional to do it on the books, but why should that stop you?
