Farm seminars

Just curious how many of you go them. This time of year I hear lots of ads for them.I'm not a farmer myself.Besides the free dinner they offer is there good information?

These types of things are usually put on by seed companies that want to sell you their products. Sure you dont pay any $$ for the meal but, you pay with your time. If they spend 4 hours giving you their information, and you get a $20.00 meal, you receive $5.00 for your undivided attention. Theres no free lunch !

As Bruce stated below they have a agenda to sell you a product. I prefer to go to farm shows like the WPS show in late March at Oshkosh wisconsin. You pay for parking but then you can talk to the vendor of your choice and still get to see the newest items out there.

The only people making money off those seminars are the people putting on the seminar. Nothing you take away from the seminar is going to help you make more money, only spend it.

That's how you consistently make money off of farming.

We do a couple of them per month, they are all done remotely and frequently we just listen to the play back versus the live version. During the winter months the Ag extensions in Ohio, Virgina, WV and PA all have them going. Topics that we listen to here are mostly pasture management and sheep management. Lots of good information in them. Based on the other comments and your question it sounds like y'all are doing something with seed companies.

Ive gone to the AGPHD soils clinic in Baltic SD the last 2 years and will be going again.I was like a deer in headlights with soil sampling/results before hand but feel comfortable now. Taking there advice on 1 acre grid samples paid for itself in the 1st year with lime savings alone. One 24 acre field I tested had ph from 5.4 to 7.2 Nice to learn holding capacities of different soils and what nutrients tie each other up.

It seems a couple folks misunderstood the question or aren't familiar with what others are referring to. There are some excellent seminars out there, including ones where no one stands to make a penny except those that attend. Even the ones sponsored by a company with something to sell, that doesn't automatically mean they don't have something to offer that can save some people money.

I disagree. Most I attend are quite informative. I can not recall any that were trying to sell me anything. Most explained research on invasive weeds, herbicide resistance, tillage options, cover crops, woodlot management, etc.,etc. Lots of good information, some of which I implement on my own operation. I enjoy learning what's new in agriculture, even if it not something I will use myself.

I go.

Many have turned into zoom type meetings now, very bland and far less interesting or fun.

I just attended the Wisconsin corn/soy/pork expo in Wisconsin Dells. Lots of good info, followed by a managed forestland owner's conference in Oshkosh. Next I'll be attending the Commodity Classic in Orlando. All good info and great trade shows and good fellowship among attendees. A goodly number of Canadians at the Commodity Classic. They're always a lot of fun. These expos/conferences, shows, etc. are all tax deductible trips assuming you are ''actively engaged in farming'', which I am.
