You're probably correct about it being a waste ..... although some might disagree (ha). The Edsel story is certainly an interesting one, nobody can deny that. Is it the real thing, like operating and useable, or maybe just set up as a display?

Since Edsel is topic, today, Washington's b-day, is the 54th anniversary of when I got my first Edsel. It was one month after I was done in the Air Force, house mate and I towed it home, had been abandoned by previous owner, housemate had ridden in it so was known to run. It is sharing storage space with some JD and IH tractors. But wait, there's more... A cat decided to move into the shop last summer, got big and yup, kittens. She had them on the front seat of the 58 Edsel station wagon. One of them bonded to me so I kept him and named him Edsel...

The Edsel's failure was its size, it was just too big of a car for what people were wanting. If it was the size of the Falcon that came out the next year or the Fairlane that came out in 62 then I think the brand would have lived. We had a 59 Merck for a while and it was just so big I could put a complete front axle with wheels on in the trunk. Too big for most garages at that time. The year after it ended the Corvair and the Valiant came out and all sold very good as they were small enough for people to handle and were about the same size as the 53 Full size Ford that is all they made at that time. It I don't think it was the design that caused its failure as some complained calling it ugly. If it had come out as the size of the 53 Ford or Mercery I think it would have sold good.

I had a '57 Merc once. You could put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the trunk and have about 6 inches sticking out.

It was handy for that.

Henry ford's son was named Edsel Bryant Ford. Bryant for his mother's maiden name. Don't know where the name Edsel came from.

But, it was definitely Henry's son! NOT a cat!

The name Edsel came from Henry's good friend,DR Edsel Ruddiman.Or maybe Ruddman,it's been a while since I learned it.I did know a kid named Edsel in school, but he was just another Eddy to us.

I guess a guy could get his golf clubs in there no problem, plus the other 3 guys equipment he played with, plus some cold beer and other stuff too. That was a BIG trunk .....
