If I go want to go from a 12.4-28 ag bar tire up to a 14.9-28 will I need to get a wider rim? will they look like balloon tires on the tractor?

Anyone done this with before and after pictures?

Thanks!

What tractor? What is your current rim width?

That will be quite a jump. The current rims are probably 11 inches at the most, more likely 10 inch. A 14.9 tire should have 13 inch rim, 12 is acceptable minimum.

Traction will be better with the recommended tire for your rim width, floatation will be better with the wider tire on your present rims.

they will be fine on there just adjust the air pressure to the tread and tire width. We put 14.9's on our MD years ago with the original rims and worked fine. Liked the way it set and pulled fine with them on it. Loaded tires too. We put 18.4's on where 16.9's were on our loader with the same rims there and if not told you would not notice the rim width on there. Loaded tires there also with about 05-700 in weights in the rim both inside and outside plus the chloride in the rear tires.

If you do put the 14.9's on be sure you put new tubes in the new tires. The old tubes will be to small and probably split at the seams.

Most old tractors these days have already been upsized one tire size on the rear. You are now looking to go two sizes past that. That's going to be too much. Not only will the sidewalls be pinched in, they will be difficult to mount.

Verify first by measuring the rim. You might luck out and the tractor still has stock tires on it. If there's any sort of gap between the wheel center and the rim, you can get an approximate rim width. Rim width is measured to the inside of the bead, and is in full inches.

So what is your actual tire size now? I have seen Case 300 tractors with 28 inch rear tires and also 38 inch rear tires but the 38 inch were narrower than the 28 inch. If you curently have the 38 inch in a 12.4 tire and go up to a 14,9 tire your speed will increase to where you will have to go to a lower gear for same speed. The 28 inch would not speed up tractor as much as the 38 inch tire will and if the 38 inch and going that much bigger you will be flying in high gear.

Wan to trade? Somebody widened the rims on my Oliver 600 by 4 inches and put 16.9 28s on it. It looks like crap. I want to go back to narrower tires and rims on it.
