one horse power

saw a video last night explaining that some draft horses can have up to 14 HP. an average human can have 1.2 HP. I thought that was interesting. Bill

We used to have a little fun in our tractor repair class and calculated horsepower with the students moving a load. Rarely got over 1HP. These were 16-18 year old kids

the calculation includes the amount of work done. I think we all know people who would not move the needle.

On YouTube there's a channel called The History Guy. I believe he did a video a while ago about horse power.

1 hp is equal to raising 550 lbs 1 foot in one second. A very strong person could do this for a few seconds but over a longer period of time even a high-endurace athlete couldn't average more than about a half hp. Horses are the same way and the definition for horsepower is what the average animal at the time could sustain all day.

Nova ran a program years ago about the Dedalus Project, human powered flight. They had a team of world class cyclists and would select one for the flight on the chosen day. According to the narrator those cyclists could continuously maintain only 1/8 horsepower.

The original one-horsepower measure was estimated by Scottish inventor James Watt who measured the weight a mining horse - about the size of a Shetland pony - could pull on a lift. One horsepower was later defined as 746 watts, after Watt had died.

Based on this rather large study, the fiftieth percentile for male cyclists is 272 watts and for females it is 212 watts. That is the output they could maintain for twenty minutes or more. A male would thus put out a little more than one-quarter horsepower and a female a little less.

typo, what's one zero? LOL!

Who invented the term horsepower??
Hint, He improved the steam engine.
James Watt!

Not to brag but 2.205 HP over a brief sprint up the stairs . Physics teacher had the 2nd best numbers and was ticked that I beat him .
