Couple days ago we fought the
carb for several hours. Tractor
wouldn't idle right and was
really running rich .... Adjusted
and cleaned, then cleaned again.
Gave up. Next morning we got to
thinking, ' what if the float
isn't floating ', sure enough!!
Got a float out of a parts carb
and we are good!! Always the
simple stuff that gets
overlooked.

Good find, and you didn't have to buy any parts, that's the kind of story I like! I have been lucky, haven't had many problems like that. I have often wondered how it would work to put a tubing adapter fitting in the bowl drain, with a piece of clear tubing, with the open end tied up high. This should show the fuel level in the bowl when not running, and if the bowl is vented it should work anytime. Has anyone ever tried this?
 
Never actually done it, but have heard of it.

It is a method used to determine the actual fuel level inside the bowl. But knowing what it is supposed to be is a mystery. The stain line on a known good float and inside the bowl is a pretty good indication.

Put some WARM water in a container and hold the float submerged in it.

Air bubbles will come out where the leak/pinhole is as air pressure rises inside the float from the heat.
 
To ADB-Ia's question do you still call it a float if it won't float???

No, now you call it a supposed to float or a used to float.
