First Run in the Merc this year

Warmed up to near 30F yesterday and was a beautiful sunny day so I figured it was time I gave the old Merc a little exercise. First start up since the end of
October and it took a while. I finally had to put 12 volts right to the starter solenoid as the old 6 volt battery just turned over so slow. Some heavily edited
video of the procedure here.

52 Merc starts

Great Merc! Nice to see an original. Too much to take in all at once. The Chevy square body, IH truck, the snowmobile looks familiar but I can't see it clearly enough and was that other car a Chevy II? Again, my phone's clarity just isn't sharp enough. Of course the scratched screen protector doesn't help!

Yes, the square body is an 81 Sierra Classic. My old green IH S160 water truck and the 64 Chevy II. All have showed up in my videos over the years. I took this one in June of 2021 as we were heading out to a car show.

The Chevy II caught my eye because my
grandparent's next door neighbor had one
and I helped her with a couple of things
on it when I was a teenager. Then I saw
this picture and man, that could be the
same car, except that we are in North
Dakota, not Saskatchewan! Same color, same
year. She had it repainted in the
early/mid eighties. I always wondered what
happened to that car after she passed
away. Yours looks great!

Thanks, the old Chevy II has been in the family since new although I've only had it for about 25 years. I've got the original bill of sale for it too.

Next door neighbor had a '52 2 door hardtop, when I was a kid, traded in their '47 Coupe on it. Both beautiful cars. Glad to see you saving one.

I always enjoy your pictures of your Merc.

I've probably mentioned this before, but I had a '52 back in the day that I was all over the country with. My mother was in a serious accident with it in 1958 while I was in the Far East. They rebuilt it by the time I came home, but it just didn't drive the same. I traded it on a '57 Merc.

BTW, Mom survived the accident OK.

So you know the 52 Mercs well and have probably put more miles on yours than I have on this one. I was too young to have my drivers license when my dad quit driving it in 1969. The old flathead had burned valves and was impossible to start anymore.

Our big-time-operator neighbor bought a new 53, same color. Us kids thought that was really deluxe.
Then he traded it for a new 55 Chev V8. We all thought that was great, and a few more showed
up around the district. Immediate recognition for a future classic. My dad had a new dark green
1954 Pontiac flathead Six. A lot of farmers drove ton and a half trucks, and a bunch of them drove
half-tons. They didn't have to use taxed gas in them. {Red gas, Purple Gas, Amber gas]. We had
a new 1949 REO Speedwagon 1 1/2 ton. I still have it in the shed.

(quoted from post at 13:24:56 02/07/23) Hi. Nice pickup, had a 69 fleet side with 4 on the floor. Beautiful countryside, where was the picture taken?
This old C10 is a 70 or 71. Its had multiple owners before it ended up in my hands. Still a good working truck but its in storage for now as I'm using my 81. All photos are on my farm here in good old Saskatchewan.
