High prices

Is there any relief in the prices of tractors and farm equipment? Been watching the prices of tractors and equipment and they still seem to be breaking records. If it something I am interested in the price starts at what I was thinking would be my buying price. Was looking at a tractor that I thought I would go about $10,000 on it knowing it needed some work, along with a new bucket and front tires. I knew it would take at least another $6000 to get it up to where I would be able to use it. Well, it sold for just short of $16,000 and still needed the additional $6000 put into it. Some say that with higher interest rates the prices are down, but I have not seen it. It's not just the farm tractors and equipment. I have been watching several farm toy auctions trying to buy a certain model tractor. People are paying some really high prices. I have never believed in buying toys for resale, and I would not pay a price that the loss of value will let you lose hundreds of dollars just so you can say you have one. When you see toys that are going for hundreds and even thousands more than they did just a couple of years ago, you wonder when is it going to slow down?

See it in compact tractors as well. We exited beef farming almost a year ago and sold off all our remaining farm equipment minus a couple antiques , and had no trouble getting what we thought was a reasonable price. Had to sell an awful lot of good used farm equipment to fund the purchase of a nice used compact.

I have quit sending you information but in the last 8 weeks I have seen 4 cubs for sale around here all for less than a thousand one for 500 that ran.

I've been looking for a Backhoe anything I can afford starts higher than I want to go. Pretty good looking one on a sale probably go for close to 25,000 or more.

I am what you might describe as being tractor adequate. I have enough to get the work done but it sure would be nice to have a few backups. Stuff never breaks sitting in the shed during the winter but when you have a job that needs to be done ASAP. I think there will be a correction in terms of prices in the economy sooner versus later.

If anything, higher interest rates will only increase the prices on tractors on the lower end of the price market. Simply because the increase rates will make buying a new tractor even more costly. And this will drive people to look at used tractors or just with hold their hood used tractor off of the market because they dont want to spring for new.
Tractor prices do have quite a spread, because of age, hp and 2wd or 4wd ? Loader or no loader.
I was in the habit of buying new tractors, but DEF has cured me of that, at least for the foreseeable future. There are lots of good pre DEF tractors out there.

We had DEF on a NewHolland T6 165 , had it for 5 years and just about everything on the tractor including DEF worked flawlessly in all temperatures during the 3000 hrs we put on it. Hands down best tractor we ever had. Also had DEF on a Kubota M6S 111 , the tractor itself was terrific but the DEF had a small reservoir (only hold 3/4 of a small jug when low) and frequently wanted you to stop and let it do its thing when being mainly used as a chore tractor.

Are toy prices really that high? I haven't been paying a lick of attention. I should consign about half of mine in an online auction I guess, but I just can't pull the trigger and sell something when I don't need the money.

It's the same thing with my White 2-135. I'd be just as well off to sell that and buy a 2-85 or another 2-105 to replace the 2-135 and Oliver 1850 both. I don't need that much power anymore, but it's paid for. I haven't done much maintenance on it in several years, but I've been buying some parts to do some work on it when it warms up.

You had better luck than I did. I wont go into details, but I got rid of the tractor with 2,400 hours and over $5,000.00 repairs on the DEF, and too many days with a nearly new tractor down or left stranded on the side of the road because the transmission and DEF couldnt communicate via the Electronic Control Module.

When farm commodity prices drop. Right now farmers are swimming in cash so everyone and his brother wants to get on the gravy train too.

It's not just the toys, it's just about everything. Look at the horse market. 72k for one at the SD stock show auction a week ago, couple yesterday at a sale in MN brought over 50k each, 75 head average they say was around 17-18k. Crazy, prices, but where is the money coming from? How are so many people so flush with cash?

Inflation and new tractor prices will keep the price of good used tractors up.I have a JD 855 compact w/loader that I bought and fixed up have about $5000 in it,turned down $7000.

I saw the same thing with pleasure horses at auction. Bids going three and four times higher than they ought to be. Personally I have little use for horses, but sometimes the auction is a nice diversion. Dave

Yes, grain prices make farming look pretty good right now but the cost of our inputs has also gone sky high. So we are no better off. Everything we need to produce a crop, including equipment, has gone crazy high in price. The old saying used to be, "the cure for high prices is high prices".

i don't believe the price of things will be coming down. the guy that paid 20k for a tractor is not going to sell it for 15k. it will take a total financial meltdown for things to reset. as long as the computers running the markets can stay 10 seconds ahead of everything we will be ok. you need a tractor, go buy a tractor. if you want to have a dance, you gotta pay the band. good luck.
