Quick question I have a 1949 260 gas the starter is 4080.
I am wondering what the alternative starter is that's being used.
There must be a starter from 1979 for 351M or ford 460 maybe.
GMC 350 starter or a Dodge caravan
If anyone knows this answered I could use it at this point
Thank you.

Sounds like a '49 Massey Harris 44 with a Continental 260 gas engine, is that correct? The starter is an Autolite 4080? And you are asking if one of the Ford, GM or Mopar starters will bolt right up and work?

Did someone tell you that it would? Sounds like someone said it MUST work. Maybe I'm missing something here or misreading your post.

I seriously doubt anything else would bolt on and work.

Most of the old engines used larger teeth on the flywheel gear than modern automotive applications.

Not worth the risk of mismatching and damaging the gear.

May I ask why you would need to try this?

I was putting it out there
Hoping there was an alternative
the last starter I had chewed. all the teeth of my fly wheel i have put a new flywheel on but I don't want this to happen Agen it was a bigger job.

I had to change the ring gear the last starter chewed all the teeth off all 121 of them I have it changed it now just thought out loud and hoped there was something

The correct starter did not chew all the teeth off your ring gear.

You need to get the correct starter with the correct drive (Bendix) that meshes correctly with your ring gear.

Just because the starter has "4080" on it does not mean it has the correct starter drive installed.

The starter rebuilder put a different type of starter drive on my starter on my Cockshutt with a Continental motor for me the last time my shaft bent. It's been working for years now.

GRANT: I have a page here from a CMP (Canadian Motor Product) catalogue from back then that says the starter on MH44's should be a 4078. I can't find any Masseys on this list with a 4080 starter but some Googling shows the 4080 6F starter being used on the model 33's which came later. Maybe that's your problem? The starter 'drive' is listed and should be an SD37 according to my list here, maybe that is a Bendix drive number? Do some Googling and check eBay, etc.

Grant welcome to YT! Does the starter grind and not
engage to crank the engine? Does it require multiple
tries to get it to engage? When it is engaging does it
sound bad or in other words have a grinding or
growling you normally do not hear compared to other
automotive or other tractors when they are starting?
Do you hear any grinding or scraping sounds coming
from the starter area while it is running? Any of the
proceeding symptoms may indicate problems. On most
old tractors it is not real difficult to remove the starter.
Also fter a couple dozen starts pull the starter out and
look at the starter drive and the flywheel gears if you
see undue wear you need to do something to correct
the problem.

Grant, My 1965 Wilson Catalog says MAX4078 fits Cockshutt 1949-58 , Buda Engine starter drive D315.
Same Catalog says MAX4080 fits Massey Harris 33,44,44K and 44L with # D315 Drive.I don't have number for nose cone.
D3115 drive also fit 1944-54 IH T6.

Wilson's website lists 3 starters. One 12 v and two 6 volt.
My guess is both starters were used (4078 and 4080). They even list drive end housings with part number.
