D21 series2 vs 1256

Hello, this is my first post on this forum and I have a real doozy of a question. I caught the "Tractor Fever" a few years ago and am interested in comparisons. I have a 1256 and was wondering how they stacked up to the D21 performance wise. I know the series 2 has more hp and out pulled the 1256 in Nebraska but they had a lot more weight on the D21 and the 1256 actually out pulled it when they tested them without ballast.

Dont know much about the Allis. But a neighbor years ago had one.He just raved about how much power it had. However,I do own a 1256.Love it. It has plenty of power. Has a lot of low end torque. Tested
once at 126 Hp. A new pump later gave it even more power. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

There are things I like on a 1256 which is just a heavier version of my 856. And one of the things I don't like is the puny hydraulic pump of only 12GPM on a 2000PSI. IT should have had more like 20 GPM with 2500 PSI. Biggest complaint I have with IH was the hydraulic pump capacity. I guess I would prefer the The 1256 though. The D21 was a horse in it's time though.

Not a D21, but we had a AC 190 growing up, it had the best hydraulics compared to any other tractor
we had and we had several, IH, JD, Oliver, I presume the D21 would have similar hydraulic capacity.

I actually owned them both at the same time. Always put my daughter (16 years old) on the D21. The
real main difference was the transmission , just easier an more gears in the IH. with the same 21 ft
cutting disk behind either it was just about ever with the ac burning about 5 or 6 gallon fuel in a
10 hr day. wish I had either one of them back today.

What hurt the D21,210 and 220 tractors in my area was the 1000 RPM only PTO,farmers would have liked to have the extra HP but still had 540 PTO equipment.I had a 210 for awhile but sold it for that reason.

Ok. Thanks for your honest opinions and facts from experience. These tractors were before my time but I am very interested in them. I haven't actually seen a D21 in person but they do look impressive. I actually like the D series as a whole. Again I realize the series 2 has more hp but I'm wondering if different variables such as gearing, torque curve etc. can at times make up for and even overcome hp numbers.

Hi, before you buy a D-21, get on you r hand a knees and look up the rear Differential, thats looks pretty puny to me, I worked for a the Allis Dealer, long time ago!

Oh if my wife has any say (and she sure does) I don't think I'll be buying one anytime soon. I bought an 806 3 years ago and 1256 last year so I'm done for a while lol.

Ok. Thanks for your input guys. So it sounds like the general consensus is a 1256 will hold its own with a series 2 D21 power wise. The AC has better hydraulics and the IH is pretty much better in every other way?
