Hearing aids, noisy tractor cab and sound reduction?

My Kubota cab is a little on the noisy side. I wear headphones I use for target practice and it will reduce cab noise to zero and radio is noise free.

Will cheapie OTC hearing aids reduce cab noise and be more comfortable than headphones with noise reduction?

The older I get the more difficult it is to separate music from background noise.

I don't wear my hearing aids when driving tractor, I wear ear plugs. The steel canopy that I put on our JD 4600 probably make it a little noisier, especially when using the brush cutter. I have thought about putting some sound deadening material on the underside of the canopy, but haven't yet.

No...

however, a good set noise reduction head phones/ ear-phones work well. Bluetooth is better. imo. thx

NO. Take hearing aids off and use what you use for shooting or regular ear muffs or plugs. Why would you want to leave hearing aids on in the first place if it is that noisy.

Hey Russ -

Yup.....your steel canopy is bouncing sound back at ya, and itself, is operating like the skin of a drum. Cover the underside of your canopy with something like indoor/outdoor carpeting. You'll be amazed as the reduction of noise from the steel vibrating, and noise bouncing off the reflective surface !

I always take my hearing aids out when around noise or when it is hot and you sre sweaty. Moisture will kill them. You are to put them in a dryer box at the end of the day. One word of caution. Check your ears before getting into the shower. Oh yea, it will happen.

Kubota cabs are a bit on the noisy side. As an example, in the Nebraska tests the Kubota M6-111 had a cab sound level from 75.2db to 80.8 db. The similar John Deere 6125M had a sound level range of 67.9 to 78.9. I have a 6125M John Deere and a CIH Maxxum 125M which has a sound level of 85.5. The John Deere in comparison is more like being in a car. You can hardly hear the engine.

My hearing loss is severe so I have the full ear molds. I found using earmuffs causes feedback whine and taking them out for mowing or field work is a pain. Still have to carry them somehow. Mine will shut off by holding the volume button down and they block most of the noise, yet I can still hear the equipment enough. I got little fabric socks to put over them in hot weather.

Have you looked at Isotunes? I use these on the lawnmower. They have magnets in the ends so when not in use they wrap around your neck like a necklace. They also bluetooth to your phone if that's a plus for you. For me they're small enough i don't mind carrying them around so I actually have them when I need them.

I did get in the shower with mine in when I first got them, but I realized it quickly! Costco assured me that they were somewhat waterproof, and it probably wasn't a problem. I have Phonak's, got them 4 years ago.

Hearing aids simply amplify whatever sound there is. If you're in your tractor cab they're going to amplify the tractor cab noise. I can change the profile on my aids for different situations (e.g. indoors, outdoors or in a restaurant), but I find those settings don't seem to improve anything.

I often have my hearing aids in when operating my zero turn mower, simply because I don't want to take them out and risking losing them. I wear a set of 3M WorkTunes radio earmuffs; with my hearing aids in or out I can barely understand the radio over the mower noise. What I do notice when I have my hearing aids in is I think my mower is coming apart because the sound of the mower is so much different with the high frequencies amplified.

Mark,

Is this false advertising, Noise Cancelling Hearing Amplifier?

Jerry,

I'm waiting for DRs to put my head on a younger pain free body with a stronger body.
The older I get the more background noise bothers me in the tractor and car. I can wear headphones in a tractor, not the car.
You are lucky to be 80 and in better shape than I am.
What's your secret?

Without looking at the actual ad, I'd say it probably is.

Noise-canceling, to me, means a device improves the signal-to-noise ratio. Noise-cancelling headsets try to remove outside noise so the headset audio can be heard more clearly. How can a hearing aid discriminate between 'noise' and 'signal' when both are received by the same microphone?

I was hoping hearing aids have selective hearing! Can't you ignore some people talking and listen to others? lol

The headphones I use for target practice does reduce background noise and I can clearly listen to the radio in the cab.
Try it.

I would like to find something better than my WorkTunes headsets. I have two of them, and they're both big disappointments. They work well enough with a chainsaw or my walk-behind leaf blower, but they're totally inadequate for the ZTR mower.

Maybe you just need new cushions on the headphones you have??

To me the headphones would be more comfy than anything jambed into my ear canals.

Amen to that. I have enough irritation in my ears, I can't stand sticking anything in there. I don't think pilots do. I think they
all wear noise cancelling headphones.
