exhaust baffle

I've a '42 Farmall H and it's way too loud. Before spending a bunch of money on a new muffler I'm considering trying a baffle insert to see if that takes out some of the bark. They can be had for about $10 so it seems worth a try but I'd like to know if anyone has tried this. Since they restrict the exhaust somewhat I'm wondering how much the backpressure would impact horsepower. Thanks.

Here's what I'm looking at: https://www.amazon.com/FOLCONROAD-Universal-Motorcycle-Exhaust-Removable/dp/B07FDXB71P/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=xTcFw&content-id=amzn1.sym.b4f172f0-a2ab-4ffa-ac9d-22e96231ca8e&pf_rd_p=b4f172f0-a2ab-4ffa-ac9d-22e96231ca8e&pf_rd_r=197XMZ01HEMQQTNZZ2EK&pd_rd_wg=WOjfY&pd_rd_r=30690674-3a8a-47cb-b137-675ba7dd3838&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_atf_m&th=1

You would need to show us the baffle you intend to use! Will it increase back pressure Some, but not enough to make a HP difference. Here is an example! Jim

Never saw one of those before. I assume it goes inside the existing muffler? From the bottom? Top? How exactly does it work? What holds it in place?

That reminds me of the the chambered exhaust pipes I had on a 70 El Camino. They looked like wrinkled pipes.

A guy gave them to me because he couldn't stand the noise and I gave them to another guy because I couldn't stand the noise.

The Nelson replacement mufflers you'd get at the dealer had a baffle right in the middle of the expansion chamber. Unfortunately the "restoration quality" mufflers do not, and they are just as loud as a straight pipe. Stanley mufflers do not have a full baffle either, just "punch-outs" that stick into the main pipe and do pretty much nothing to quiet the tractor down.

I don't think this motorcycle baffle is going to do much stuffed in the end of the exhaust pipe.

For sure it is a unique and novel solution. Usually people just let themselves go deaf or wear hearing protection.

If you want a cheap solution that works, just put a car muffler from the junk yard. The car mufflers always have baffles.

I did that on an underslung muffler and it made a huge diff.

I took couple fender washers and ground them to fit snugly in a Stanley tube.Slid one from each end near the center of the
punch outs put a bolt through them to pinch on the tabs. Kind of like the old factory mufflers but a little more work.

I've got 2 Ms that I use regularly. 1 has
the standard Stanley style muffler that
you buy at the local Farm and Home Supply.
The other has a straight pipe that is a
little longer than a regular muffler. I
prefer the straight pipe. It really
bellars under a good load but the noise is
a little deeper toned and above the
operator. The muffled one is quieter, but
under load has a very sharp tone.

IF YOU do stuff stainless steel wool in the pipe MAKE certain that you put two holes in the pipe and put a wire across to hold it in OTHERWISE it will blow out [ found the hard way on our lawn tractor]

If the inside of the muffler is all rusted
up and blown out, it probably won't be long
before the rest of it will be falling off
the manifold. Likely when you brush up
against that small tree limb that don't
look big enough to do any damage.

You can try what you want, but you might
only be buying yourself just a little bit
of time.

I inquired about a straight pipe one time
at the parts store. The guy behind the
counter fixed me up with a muffler that
wasn't to expensive. I think he had
probably seen to many old timers come in
that were hard of hearing.
