International Scout 4x4

So, talking to my neighbor lady, her mom is trying to sell her recently departed husband's 1980 Scout 2. Said someone is offering her 10k. I asked if i might look at it. Rolled up the garage door and wow. Very well maintained, and full of options. It's got a V8, not the 4cyl, AC, 4x4, interior super clean, outside very strait, some light surface rust in a couple places. The rear of one rocker is starting to rust, but felt solid, the other rocker good. Underneath is beautiful. I would rate very good to excellent. Pulled up a valuation site and it said that unit, in good condition, with 4cyl is $31,500. Need some input from those who know. Is that a genuine valuation, and what might this unit be worth with big motor, AC, etc.?? They asked me to dinner tonight to tell their mom. I told them, obviously, do not sell it to anyone until we know more.

Thanks,

Brian

Just before the owner past he pulled the carb. We are going to roll out of garage into light for pics. Will post very soon. Doing some more research, it seems as though this unit might be a 40k+ Scout. I'm a tractor guy, but this thing is nice! All original, strangely I have not checked mileage yet, but I bet it is low. Daughter said he purchased it from out west, thus the little amount of rust. Read rust can be an issue with these. I'm very excited for them. Glad I saw before she let it got for 10k!

Just wondering, does it have a four barrel carburetor ? If it does,is the intake manifold aluminum ?
Having both is a big plus. Interest in IH Scouts is right up there with early Ford Broncos. $$$$!

Ahh so i suspect it's got the 318 Chrysler v-8 with the Torqflite transmission, have no idea of Value,,but got a neighbor who has one,the light blue colored one,but his isnt for sale either!

They were built nearby in Ft Wayne Indiana. They started rusting away as soon as they were driven out of the factory. I knew a lot of the guys who built them, mostly dead now.

Dad had an IH 3/4 4X4 pickup with the Chrysler auto. He knocked a cooler line off one time and burned some clutch plates inside. My younger brother removed/replaced the trans and I repaired it for him. Engine was the 345 V-8 running on LP gas.

Maybe sit down before you open the Haggerty link below. If it fails to open, you'll have to log in or make an account and log in or reply back and I will manually include the values from their price guide. Remember to SIT DOWN and don't say I didn't tell youu .....

I had a 1965 Loadstar 1600 flatbed with the 304 and 5 speed manual and a very low axle ratio, not a 2 speed. I finally put a 4 speed Brown-Lite behind the main tranny, big improvement. I knew Chrysler auto trans were used in some, but one poster mentioned the Chrysler 318 engine in one. I didn't know if Chrysler engines were also used in them or if it had been repowered with one.

I've never seen a Chrysler engine used in any IH truck, only the auto trans was Chrysler. My brother has an old 1600 with the Perkins 6.354 diesel option and a manual trans with two speed rear axle. The late 1/2 ton did have the AMC 232 six option with the Chrysler auto trans, same as some AMC cars used. Some Scouts around here also had either the 152 or 196 four which was 1/2 of the 304 or 392 V-8. A neighbor used to drag race his Scout four against the VW bug at the local strip, he beat a lot of bugs that way with his 196 in the four cylinder class.

I wish you well, BUT I did the Hagerty evaluation just for a laugh.

My 1963 Land Rover is now worth $70,000 by their calculation, but it is actually only worth about 20K in the real world. I went and looked at a $12,000-15,000 1929 Model ''A'' a few days ago that the guy wants $27,000 (''OBO'') for. Now I know where he probably got that crazy price from.

Of course, if somebody wants to give me 70K for my rover...

Measure wheelbase.
100 inches is the regular scout
118 inches is the traveler scout
1980 was last model year
Would be interesting to know the time of production.

Look up under the front seat up in the springs for a build sheet. If there is one be very careful and don't ruin it.

Thank you. As soon as I saw it I searched for 1980 Scout....xxx, and Hagerty was first thing that popped up. It shows value for good condition with 4 cylinder at $31,500. I think this one is better than good. I just met and had dinner with the lady selling it, she is very sweet. Would like to help her get a fair price for it. I told her that just from what I have read and learned tonight that I think it is easily worth 40+. She has a lot of documentation. I'll know more soon. Appreciate any info and guidance.
