Large pig litter

Had a guilt have her litter of pigs last night. She looked huge before so I expected a lot.

But I didn't expect this many, especially for her first litter.

She actually had 19, 3 were born dead and another must have gotten laid on last night, so she has 15 left right now. I woul have preferred 12 or 13 so she had enough teats to feed them, she has 14. But I'm very pleased. The last 2 only had 6 and 1 and I was no pleased by that. So maybe this will be a turning point. I have another coming in a few weeks and she looks like she has a large litter as well, although not as big as this one. And she has 16 teat so she could feed more.

This guilt will go to butcher after she is done feeding these I think, the boar damaged her rear leg while breeding her and she has trouble getting around. That is sad since she had so many pigs. I will see how she does tho.

I worked on my 2 uncles hog farm for about 6 years when I was young.
Don't remember ever seeing that many in a litter.

That is a lot. Your case fund will get a boost when you sell them. Do you sell them as feeders or at market weight ???

You can orphan pigs to another litter if the birth day is less than 24 hours apart. I do it all the time.

I've never raised a pig but I've been around a bundh of them. Does anyone use farrowing crates any more? Jon mentioned that one piglet probably was lain upon and was killed. I know that the animal advocates hated farrowing crates but they really did provide protection for baby pigs. So, are they still used?

They are stillused in most commercial farrowing. But even then they still lay on one occasionally.

There won't be any that close. The last 2 that had litters were 3 weeks apart but shared nursing al the pigs. Hoping that happens here.

I do both, my pen that I feed them out in holds 15 nicely so any over that will be sold as feeder pigs. In this case the pen is already in use so these 2 litters will both be mostly feeder pigs.

From what I've seen on the price and availably of feeder pigs these day you should do pretty good with a litter that size. Hopefully they will all make to weaning stage.

When we farrowed in pens we nailed a 1X10 board across the corner of the pen about foot off the floor. Hang a heat lamp in that corner. The pigs would gather under the heat lamp except when they came out to suck. Mom couldn't get in there to lay on them.

When I was very young ,the red sow had a litter like that ,and one runt was saved ,he ended up 900 pounds before they got rid of him .I would got into the pen and pet ,him .Dad didnt like that so he had to go.

That's what Dad did as well. Place for the piglets to stay out of the way and keep warm.

Nothing really to add except to tell you congratulations. Never had a litter that large either. When we cut off a corner I also used plywood because some of the sows would stand on the board and bang on the light. So the plywood made a guard as well as windbreak and held heat a little better. I am deathly afraid of a barn fire. If you are building a herd, some of her gilts should be held back for breeding.
