The path of least resistance??? :)

Easier to walk where someone else has trod. I will walk in my husbands's footprints on the way to the garage.

They will walk along a constant grade. And once a path be
comes habit they don't like to change.

Grazing is more random but ours had the same path to go over the hill to get to the ditch. Haven't had cows for 20 years and there still a rut where they walked.

Follow lead cow. They will change a path but only if pecking order changes or change in landscape requires. There are two paths 5 foot apart in our pasture all the way across. One from the old lead cow 5 foot from the new path

Something not seen anymore as there are few cows on pasture. At home the trails started beyond the barn, past the cow humps by the low ground pond, and branched out to all corners of the pasture. They had worn a 4-lane through the grove out to the cattle pass which took them to the lower pasture/ meadow. The upper pasture had a network of single lanes up over the hill through the woods and also out west through the low ground.
