Combine auger hard facing?

We are in the process of getting our
CNH 2344 combine in good shape for
this upcoming season. The vertical
grain tank auger has to be replaced.
To help limit wear on the new
replacement auger I thought of
welding a hard facing type of rod on
the entire fighting edge. Thoughts
on this ??

You could also use what is called a reinforcing ribbon, and weld an extra layer on the outside. The only issue might be the auger is an odd pitch, which would be not easy to match. On newer combines, at least Deere uses weird pitch dimensions which are hard to duplicate.

A company such as express flighting or similar could be a resource for the repair ribbon.

I've seen discarded concave wires used for ribbon on auger edges. I asked the fellow that did it if it was a pain to do. He said it goes pretty quick. Just do your bending while the last weld is still red.

Not uncommon. Some manufacturers use hard face as an oem option.

You can get hard facing wire to run in a mug welder, makes the project much easier. A bead about a half inch wide works well.

Flame metal deposition, or plasma spray will do it rapidly call around for estimates. It might be least expensive. Jim
