JohnDeere 5510 Shifting

My John Deere 5510 seems to be stuck in 4 wheel drive. When I got the tractor a few years ago the 4wd shifter was very stiff. I was able to get in fwd and just left it, because it can be full time on the farm, what I bought it for. I now need to do a 7-8 mile road trip and concerned about fwd at 20 mph.
Is there something simple to check? If you're going to tell me anything involving the cab coming off, not happening. I'll just. deal with it. Not pulling hard on it. Don't want to force making a bigger problem. Thoughts?

Has the lever seized to the ''shoulder bolt'' it pivots on?

That would be the first thing to check, IMHO.

The PTO lever on a customer's 5403 (of which the mounting/pivot setup is just like the MFWD lever on your 5510) was STUCK in that pivot area, I got it worked loose with penetrating oil and motion, then removed it and cleaned up the bolt and bushings and drilled the lever for a grease zerk between the bushings.

My 5400MFWD likes to be rocked gently to shift in/out of 4X4, especially a bump in reverse. With the new tires all the way around, it shifts easier- I think the worn front tread caused excessive binding in the trans- slightly dissimilar ratios.

This is why you want to get it out of 4x4 before hitting the road if at all possible. Driving it in 4x4 on dry pavement is going to be hard on the driveline due to the lead the front end will have.

Alternatively you could remove the driveshaft to the front end.
