JD 4440 sold at auction for $73,000

WOW, How much did they sell for new? A few years ago you could buy them all day long for $15 grand. Bill

Just for discussion, Why would someone pay that much for one??? Family heirloom?? much cheaper than a new 140 hp tractor? Tax
write off? Perhaps the guy is a billionaire and did not do his homework and thought this was a good buy. or maybe just because he
wanted to. Opinions?? Bill

I did a little internet search. These tractors are no 40-
42 years old. Most are two wheel drive. I can only
guess that they would have been used a minimum of
200 hours per year average, so 8,000 hour tractor if
not twice that many hours. And they are available from
$30,000.00 -$75,000.00 . And most claim to be
144hp. I believe JD will want $200,000.00 for the
equipment tractor new in 2023. If you can buy one for
20 Grand or less, you had better jump on it! Give it a
set of tires, cab kit and a rattle can rebuild, and double
your money

Too steep for me but when you
consider cost per hp (which is the
biggest factor) compared to a new
one of comparable hp it's a good
buy.

Many reasons of course. Some just may want the attention. Has everyone on this post giving it attention right? You included. Wingnut

They were/are John Deeres work horse of that era. Id rather have a 4440 than a 4020 any day. The JD 4440s are still very desirable tractors and bring high prices even at regular auctions. My brother has had one for nearly 40 years. He calls it Old Reliable , because it has been relatively trouble free for him. It always starts. Easy to operate. Easy to enter the quite cab. Has Heat/AC, power steering, power shift. All controls are in a handy position. Comfortable adjustable seat and adjustable steering wheel. On newer tractors, when the computer fails or when the DEF tank is empty you are stopped. But the old 4440 will still run strong.

(quoted from post at 16:34:19 01/19/23) I will take a 4455 any day over a 4440

I agree except for the timing gear operated water pump that can leak coolant into engine crankcase if WP seal fails & the tiny weep hole in WP plugged. I know all about the water pump seal failing because I've owned a 4255 since '93. My 4255 is on it's 3rd water pump in 11,600+ hrs of use. I wonder what were JD engineers thinking about!!!!

If I was going to buy another tractor over a 100 HP it would have to have MFWD on it and that lets out all the older than the 50 series models for that. Yes you could get the hydraulic front on the 30or 40 series and it sucked if you needed your front axle drive and to lift anything one had to suffer for the other. Watched a guy digging sugar beets with one and he had to stop to run the tank empty on it or lose the front axle to get around. Yup it seems top be that wet when digging beets in the fall. I remeber pulling semi's with 4wd tractors from empty to out on the road loaded.

It would be interesting to know what the individual is going to do with the tractor. If it is restored could possibly be going to a collector. $73,000 is not a lot of
money in today's world

Grandpa could not get over the neighbor paying $20K for a new 4240 in 1977- they made that much milking about 100 cows. Unfortunately for them, that pattern did not continue for long enough.

From recent offers, my 4430 has doubled in value in the seven years I've owned it- better than my 401K, unfortunately.

Hmmmm ..... '$73,000 is not a lot of money in today's world' ...... some of us might disagree with that Buck. I guess it depends on what it can buy .... in this case a tractor which is the topic of the discussion of course.
