I know this is tractor talk but I am asking about an IH, plus this site gets a lot of traffic. I am restoring a Scout and looking into having the body dipped to strip rust etc. I was wondering if any of you guys ever had this done on a vehicle. I know its pricey and have looked at a lot on the net. Just wanted to hear from experience. Thanks

we looked in to acid dipping bodies for restorations. cost from 2500 to 5000 typical. process takes about a month. the chemicals will dissolve any soft metals, ie aluminum., magnesium or pot metal. we instead use a company called media tech. once the body is completely disassembled, they drop off a rotisserie to mount the body on, then they haul it to their facility in an enclosed trailer. they use soda blast, crushed glass media, walnut shell and others as well. cost is about 2grand give or take. they can also do corvettes.

I had this 1978 Ramcharger done last summer, cost 3 thousand for the body, doors, hood, front fenders and tailgate. When I'm done with the metal work it will go back and get redipped and then dipped in a protective coating that gets into everywhere.

ange? :p

So, the 3 grand covers just the one dip? I ask, because the videos I watched show caustic, neutralizer and aluminizer-three dips at one time.

it comes up occasionally on two forums that I frequent about my antique car. It is always talked about favorably, but I don't recall price being given.

I thought about that route also. But how do you blast out the inside of doors and tailgate, etc down into the pinch welds?

Hey RedTom there is another way -- vapor blasting --I had a complete 54 chevy body (on the frame) done up here at Spencer,Iowa 800 bucks -- it took out all the old body filler and every spec of paint !Did the under side of the hood and trunk too !The inner doors and door frames and anything that had paint on it! It looked like brand new metal when done ! Roy

if the doors are rusting on the lower seam, the only way is to skin the door and clean up the shell. we use an adhesive when skinning instead of crimping . on a tailgate, its cheaper to replace the gate than try to fix it.

Built and building Scouts all along. Have never dipped one. Have cut and sandblasted a lot. Check my home page on face book for latest build. ell I guess you will need my name send me an e-mail if interested. O heck I will just post a picture here.

Thats what I paid, caustic, neutralizer what ever they all did to it. The company I used has been doing it for 40 years. Its what worked for me and I'm satisfied. When I look at body shop rates and the hours they would spend I don't think it was bad. No hobbies are cheap! My wife said how much are you going to spend on this project? A lot less than a new one.
