Rust when removing old manifold

Well I decided to take the froze up distillate manifold off and replace it with a new gas one in my quest to get this 1940 h to run. The guy that sold me this tractor said it ran last summer. Well the bad news is when removing the manifold three of the ports have rust in them and the other three are black. I would say it has not run in a long time. Now I don't know what to do. Should I tear into the motor and go to the expense of doing a valve job and rings o rput the new manifold on and see if it will start. What do you guys think?,

Pull the valve cover and make sure the valves are operating (maybe check the adjustment to assure none are too tight) then put the manifold on and start it. Jim

Shop vac out the ports if you
want to..... New gasket and
manifold, should be ok... I do
like the idea of pulling valve
cover and checking things out.
Stuff gets bent really easy in
there!

You are unlikely to hurt anything by trying to get it running as-is, as long as the engine can be rotated by hand. If something does happen to break, it was ready to break before you ever touched it.

have u even checked to see if the engine turns over? i would check to make no valves are stuck first thing.remove plugs and squirt oil in
each cylinder, then belt it to another tractor and let it wheel over for 15-20 minutes, get everything all lubed up and warmed then check the
compression. checking compression dont amount to much on an engine sitting with dry cylinders.plus you will have bits of junk in the valve
seats and ports and this will blow everything out. if you cant belt it up then just check compression after u lube the cylinders and crank it
over with the starter. why would you tear it down first when you dont know what you have? make the decision after your trouble shoot. if
compression is decent install the manifold and start it and go from there would be my plan.

i. would pull the spark plugs and put a borescope down there yo see what the cylinders look like. amazon has them for about 40 dollars that
hook up to a cell phone. harbor freight sells one for about 80 dollars. better to see what it looks like before tearing into it.

(quoted from post at 10:59:42 01/13/23) If the distillate manifold is
solid, just 'froze up' someone
may be interested in it......
ctually it could probably be freed up. It almost moves. Where the pin goes thrue the manifold you can see where somebody has been banging on it . Also one stud in the top is froze up
