Shipping a fire extinguisher

Can you send a fire extinguisher in the mail? I have a very nice International Harvester one that was in a parts combine I bought and thought about listing it on the IH free auction site. Just not sure about how to ship? Just asking here but will for sure talk to my post office before listing it for sale. Tom

Not sure about USPS, but other couriers deliver them to project sites all the time. I would think if they can USPS would also.

If it is a sausage sized brass extinguisher with a T handle on the end, it is a carbon tetra-chloride extinguisher and is both not able to be mailed, and not to be used on any fire ever. If empty it can be mailed as is with no issues. A hazmat disposal of the liquid in it should be done. Heat causes Carbon-Tet to turn into Phosgene Gas. Which is a deadly nerve toxin and will kill people. Call the local Hazardous waste office for disposal info. Seriously bad stuff. Jim

One of these.

I don't think you can get away with not calling the post office. I think if they allow it at all it would have to be empty and cleaned out. There should be no problem shipping the shell.

It is newer than that. I am guessing 1970's as the combine it came out of was a 1969. I just thought an IH collector would think it was kind of neat. It would look like what you buy new today and has a neat looking Internation Harvester id plate on it.Tom

If it has a hose and handle with a pin, it is likely OK to ship, but ask the post office first. Fry chemical, or Carbon Dioxide are typical. Look at the label to see if it lists the contents. Jim

Sure you can ship a fire extinguisher.
How do you think the get from point A to point B.
You can also ship dynamite; gasoline; and other hazardous materials.
The catch is you need to follow DOT hazardous materials shipping rules.

Fire Extinguishers are UN1044 Class 2.2 Non Flammable Gas.

The extinguisher shown is not his, it is an example of a Carbon-Tet. Posted by someone else. He has not posted a picture of his. Jim
