case backhoes

I'm looking at a couple case hoes One is a 580C the other a 580B looking at the loader frame. One the engine is seized the other needs a shuttle. Not sure about either of them both listed for parts. Are they close enough parts will inter change so I could change the shuttle out of one to the other and maybe have a decent hoe or are they apples to oranges. Cabs are similar with the square style before the curved rear side window. the look an awful lot a like some times that doesn't mean much though. they are on auction and if cheap enough might make a hoe then part the rest out .

Caterpillar Guy,

Those two machines are completely difference. The 580c would be my choice it is much easier to work on.

The b you have to split to remove trans. The c you don't. B is basically a tractor with a hoe. The c is a different frame built around the hoe. C has a driveshaft from trans to rear axle, b doesn't, it is all bolted together. The engines will swap though the b smaller at 3.1 vs 3.4 in the c. I have a b, wish it was a c. Mine needs a clutch (8 speed mechanical), the c I wouldn't have to split. Just drop the driveshaft then drop the trans. Transmission does not interchange with b and c. I believe the front axle is different also.

Well what i can tell you is if the 580 B has shuttle problems then she has real problems as there are NO parts for it . The B is a real pain in the drain to work on BTDT , I tried to stay far away from Yellow work but got conned into fixing a 580B . I made the mistake of not looking for pieces and parts BEFORE we went thru the aggravation of splitting it and getting the shuttle scattered all over the bench , that is when we found out that one could NOT get pieces and parts and the only thing available was a shuttle unit for a 580 WITH PTO and to make it work in a NON PTo unit one had to have PLUGS made to seal off the open hollow shaft and press them in to hold pressure to the clutch pack's and that little Darling 15 years ago was over 5600 bucks , With labor and other pieces and parts the poor guy that got suckered into buying the machine now had twice of what he paid for it . so like i posted in one other post about a dozer OLD construction equipment that is for sale and has been setting there is a reason why it is still stetting and with Case and Deere there are a lot of pieces and parts one can NOT get . So be careful of what you look at and even thing of buying go check out and see if one can get parts and be ready for sticker shock on the prices.

What a timely post. Thanks all who chime in.

Caterpillar guy, sounds like we're hunting the same rare bird, a cheap loader/backhoe. I believe you're here in Michigan likewise, so I'd bet we've been looking at some of the same ads. My pockets aren't deep so everything I look at is pretty well clapped out or non-running. Oh well, it is what it is. The way I look at it the longer I wait the better my odds of having enough funds when that bargain comes along. Anyway, let us know how it turns out, I take it you'll still be searching if this deal falls thru.

I was looking for a 580C. But found a 480E. One of my best deals.Think I gave $5000 for it 20 yrs ago. A E has a Cummins motor. 4 cyl of a 5.9. Probably the best motor ever made. Can turn the CAV pump up from the outside. Turned it up the first week I got it. I have put almost every seal and hose on it. Some twice. I use it about a 100 hrs. A year. Parts are available on this sight.

Thanks guys. That's what I wanted to know. I just thought if I could mix and match parts I could have a cheap hoe for some tile work. I don't use one enough to really need to own one and the guys that do the work are really expensive for the little I want to do. These hoes looked tired and worn. I guess my search continues. Maybe I can get my brothers for some of it. Last guy I talked to for the bigger job was over 12,000. With fuel where it is probably not a bad price just more than I want to pay for it.
