JD 70 high crop

If the drop boxes for the rear axles have a gear drive, the differential is put in with the ring gear on the opposite side and the finals reverse the rotation. Jim

In a John Deere???? Always thought those used a three gear or chain drops. Diff ring gear isn't reversable.

The brakes on a high crop act against a chain in the final drive, and not the bull gear. I'm not savvy enough to post a link to a parts book page, but perhaps someone can.

(quoted from post at 16:33:52 12/23/22) I heard once that the brakes on these tractors turn the opposite direction of a conventional model. Why would that be?

A sprocket splined to each differential side gear drives a sprocket on the drive shaft that leads out to the drop box AND the brake shafts.

The drive shaft has a gear at the outer end that drives the big final drive gear on the axle shaft.

So the brake drums turn the opposite direction vs. a non-high crop tractor as they are driven by a chain rather than by a gear set.
