Flathead engine with no intake manifold ....

There is a 1947 Nash 600 sedan on the auction block today at the Hemmings Motor News online auction. One of the engine area photos looked strange. There was no intake manifold and the carburetor appeared to be simply bolted down to the cylinder head (sidevalve or flathead engine design). I did a bit of web surfing and found some information on those engines which is in the link below. Not sure if anyone has ever heard of or seen one of these, I sure have not. Interesting stuff .....

Yep, I had the opportunity to work on a few of those back in the day. What is even odder is the lack of a proper exhaust manifold. Just a tube with holes that match the ones in the block, clamped in place. I guess they were looking for ways to build as cheap as possible as that car was targeted at folks like me, cheap.

When I was a kid (1950's) our family car was a low-end Nash with that flathead engine.

It was prone to burning thru the exhaust manifold about once a year as I recall. But it was cheap - a simple piece of exhaust tubing with several holes punched in it. And my dad could replace it in about an hour.

Willys F4-134 Hurricane engine was also an F head engine with the exhaust in the block, and the intake (including runners) built into the cylinder head. Jim

When I had $500 to spend on a school car, I had to choose between a Rambler and a Lark. I took
the Lark because it had an oil filter. Rambler didn't.

The last flathead engine I've heard of was the Dodge Power Wagon of the 1970's.

Ran one of those engine for about 10 years.
Never had trouble with exhaust manifold pipe.
Not the easiest to put points in.

Think my BIG shop manuals just might have those engines in them. I know they cover most of the 40's and 50's but at 79 I need to srart getting rid of things like that. Any one interested?
