Good thing it's not popcorn! Hi Tee, getting any snow down that way. Light stuff coming down here and no wind so far. Merry Christmas to you and the family from all of us here.

(quoted from post at 15:37:46 12/21/22) Does corn buildup heat like green hay or is this likely
arson?do not know thats why Im asking

It can. Not sure if it would be enough to start on fire. When I was a kid, my Dad had picked some ear corn and just dumped it in a pile. One morning he came out and everything all around was covered in frost, but no frost on the corn pile. He took the tractor and loader and spread the pile out. End of problem.

It sure can. Big poultry feed mill Marion County Ohio 1 bin did that, bin still standing dis colored and holes cut in the sides from about 3 years ago. I for get how many days it took to get under control.

I would expect it to have been dry corn since most of the corn around mid MI came off at less than 17 this year and a lot was in the 15-16.5 range. SO it would dry fast in the dryer and would not have been that wet to begin with. We put corn in the bin at moistures of 14-18 and put in in late November and pulled in January with no air and cold as the day it went in. I'm only about 40 miles from Hemlock.

THANKS Mel--No snow yet but supposed to get 8-10 inches plus a lot of wind--I'm too old to enjoy winter....Have a good Christmas---Tee

Just out of high school I farmed for a local bto. It was about a 20,000 bu. bin and it had a light bulb about half way up the roof. I think the bulb had a globe around it but not positive. Anyway we filled the bin up to the peak right around the light bulb. Someone turned the light on and forgot to turn it off after about a week I was plowing on that farm. Everytime I came to the end by the bin sight it seemed like I could smell burnt corn. Finally I stopped to investigate thinking it was something with the dryer standing nearby. I could not get it narrowed down. Finally went and got the owner. He discovered it was coming from the aeration fan of the bin. When he shut the fan off it burst into flames.

up in nebraska 30 so years ago i loaded corn at an old elevator. guy who was running the downspout ran down stairs hollerin get out quick. about 300 bushels into loading the corn was smoking. we opened hopper door n let it out on the drive. it didnt flame up but they discovered a wet load was dumped in the bin. they had a dryer and started transfering corn till it wasnt smoking. actually was steam. i got a load out of another bin but after that i didnt load there for a while even though i had several loads contracted.
i dont want to be like those trash haulers ,get a load n get almost to the dump n its on fire

Brings back memories.....

In the early 80's the farm I worked on the grain dryer caught fire. Apparently the owner didn't clean out the vents in the bottom of the dryer and corn dust/chaff eventually built up and caught fire. Fire department came out, extinguished it (or so they thought) only for it to flare up again a day or 2 later. Corn embers make great coal! What a mess.....
