I won't be getting at this till spring, but just planning ahead.
I will be replacing this fitting on the tank of my John Deere 50 LP. I already have the replacement part. The old one just screws out and the new one screws back in. Just wondering what type of thread sealer to use. Is regular pipe dope or teflon tape rated for LP, or is there something special that is needed? Just want to have everything on hand when I make the switch.

Just stop at Lowes and pick up some
Rectorseal in the plumbing
department. Good stuff and that's
what it's made for.

M-Man has the correct answer. However there are many other pipe thread sealants that work just as well. But Rectorseal works for most everything.

Whatever they use at the factory that makes
propane tanks ain't worth beans in my
opinion! I had to use a big pipe wrench and
a 12 foot cheater pipe to get the valve off
of my propane tank! You may think I'm
exaggerating, but I'm not. I had to find a
larger pipe to fit over a smaller cheater
pipe, to get enough length! I just used
cheap clear house silicone to put the valve
back on. I bet that in 20 years, it will
come off as easy as the day I put it on! I
use that stuff on every nut and bolt that I
put together especially a steel bolt into
aluminium! I changed a thermostat in my car
several years ago. I thought I would never
get the bolts out of the aluminum. I put a
new thermostat in at that time. Well, the
other day, I had to put in a new thermostat.
Guess what? The bolts unscrewed as if if had
just put them in! I use it on lug nut too. I
figure that even if the nut came loose, it
wouldn't back all the way off.

From the look of that fitting, putting sealant on the threads is improper. The fitting does not seal on the
threads, it seals internally in the fitting with either an internal seal or a machined sealing surface. Putting
sealant on the threads is a poor practice on anything but a tapered pipe thread.
