I spent many an hour on a Fordson and or a grain binder, only our binder was a John Deere with the platform on the left.
Before my sister and I were big enough to ride the binder, my dad rigged a system of ropes and pulleys so he could steer the tractor and operate the clutch from the seat of the binder. One day, one of the steering ropes broke, and then the clutch rope broke. The whole thing went in circles in the field while my dad jumped off the binder, and ran up and got on the tractor. Current OSHA people would probably freak out over some of the stuff that was done back then.
