Rough Estimates for Machining

Hey, I'm working on a John Deere B. I was wondering if you gentlemen know how much it would cost to have the block rebored and milled. also how much it would cost for a complete head rebuild. Just one more: how much would it cost to have the camshaft ground

from what i have been noticing in machine prices lately it will probably take 2k out of your pocket and dont know how much change you would
get back. my buddy had a 282 head redone this spring and it was 1k.

By the time you get it bored, new pistons, rings, wrist pins, and gaskets youre probably looking at 1500-2000.

If you are serious about this, go to the shop(s) you might use, talk with them, and get estimates that will likely be closer for planning your budget. Don't know what you expected to hear for estimates but the guys are right, with shops involved the $500.00 overhaul days are gone. Many times, just parts will be more than that even if you are doing the work yourself.

40 years ago Terre Haute had many machine shops in the back of
auto parts stores. Even had a place that rebuilt camshafts.

Those places are gone after Auto Zone came to town with lifetime
warranties on starters and alternators.
Napa is the only Auto parts store remaining and they have little
business.

You will be lucky to find a machine shop let alone shopping for
the cheapest machine.

There is no longer a Radio Shack or a store to buy electronic
parts. No one repairs electronic equipment and some can't be
repaired.

I no longer rebuild engines because engines last longer.

40 years ago, it would cost me $600 to completely rebuild an
engine. $800 to rebuild a 8 cylinder. That's everything, new
freeze plugs, oil pump, water pump, cam and crank turned, new
pistons, rings, gaskets, bored and valve job.

I can't remember the last time I rebuilt engines.

Good luck finding a machine shop. Pay what they charge.

They are still around in So WI, have a good
one nearby that even knows 2 cyl. Take your
parts in for cleaning and crack check and
they will give a quote

Sounds to me like you might already have an estimate from a shop, is that correct? And perhaps are wondering if it is in line with what some of our members might guess at? Pretty difficult question but I guess you are getting some ball park amounts. If you have an estimate already, why not share it here? And if you don't, then Jim.ME offers the best advice.

About 3 years ago I had extensive machine
work done on my JD50. The shop estimate
was $1300 for machine work only, no
parts. The final tab ended up a little
below the estimate for the machine work.
To sum it up, I have over twice the
tractor's worth in parts and machine
work. My labor was free. It's a family
tractor - much sentiment made my
decisions foggy.

just buy one thats already had that done for pulling and the owner finally
figured out its a losing deal because always someone else with more money will
take the prize
