I have a Hobart Fabricator welder , 300 AMPs, the welder runs . the fan turns , the 100 outlet works , but it will not strike an arc , has anyone with a welder like this had this problem? I hate to throw it away

I have an old Craftsman welder which is doing that. I used it for about 30 years so I guess it was ready to retire. I got a new welder but haven't had time to throw it away yet.

If it has a amp selector dial it could be a burnt or dirty contact. Try moving the dial to a different heat setting. Or making sure it is exactly on the number.

I had a 225 buzzbox that did that. One of the hot wires had come loose, but it still had 110 on the other side and the fan still ran.

Unplug it and stick a probe in the outlet, should read 220V across the two hot lugs. If it only reads 115V you have found the problem, work your way toward the welder.

This is a MIG welder right?

Would for sure be worth opening it up and looking. Most likely something simple.

Look for broken wires, hot connections. A wiring diagram could probably be had with a call to customer service, that and a troubleshooting guide. Anyone with basic electrical knowledge should be able to diagnose it.

Anything more than a basic AC buzzbox welder is fairly complicated and failures can range from simple loose / mouse chewed connections to failed components.

Most issues can be repaired fairly inexpensively on older transformer welders, the newer inverter types will be much more complex to troubleshoot and costly to repair.

Just like an old tractor, an older industrial quality welder is certainly worthy of repair and continued service life.

ETA:

It seems the Hobart Fabricator is a welding power source only. Possibly not supported by the current Hobart Welding company.
