John s Deere motor

Does anyone know if a 4400 John Deere combine motor will fit a 4020 John Deere tractor. Or looking for a 4020 John s Deere motor

The 4400 has a 329. You need a 6600 hydro or sidehill or a 7700 to get a 404 engine for a 4020. Or you could get a 466 out of a 6620.

Hello Farmgirl welcome to YT! The majority of 4020s
have diesel engines, but which are you looking for a
gas or diesel? Second, where are you located?
Shipping an engine is expensive. What is the problem
with the current engine? There is an engine for sale on
the YT classified in Illinois for $1500, but it says it has blow-by
which usually means it needs major work something to
the tune of $3000 or more. to really make it a worthy
of installing in the tractor in my opinion. What is wrong
with the engine in the tractor now?
Used 4020 404 diesel engine

You can't even get a machine shop to do a teardown and an evaulation for $3000. An overhaul is pushing $10,000.

May as well fix what you have in that case.

Will the 366 fit in the 4020, though? If they're not worried about HP and just need a running driving tractor the 366 could be a viable option if it fit.

Unless a catastrophe has hit the engine such as spun main bearing or hole in block I would investigate repairing the existing
engine. The one exception might be replacing a gas engine with a diesel. I've seen a 329 in a 4010 before but would imagine that
it takes a lot of time and work to make it fit plus in the end it will not have the power of a 404 or 466. Plenty of combine
engines out there and you might find a naturally aspirated 404 or 466 which would require a minimum of adapting. An engine out of
a 4230 or similar tractor is good as well.

I just saw a 4020 with a 329 in it just this afternoon over in Benton, NY. I still would prefer a 404 or 466 if it were mine.

The company that made the kits for repowering 3020s in the 90's - Superior Diesel- also had a kit to put the 300 series 6 in a 4020, 4010, etc. I think they either sold a 359 or 414 to put in. If memory serves they used to exhibit something like a 1755 Oliver with a similar Deere engine in it, too.

Both the 359 and 414 had excellent reputations. During the mid-1980's I looked at a 4030 with a bad engine and considered a 359 repower. Money was an issue (I was still at Cornell) so I let it go.
