Those guys are apparently "standing in tall clover". I'll bet that they were neighbors working together, and maybe two went in together to purchase the baler and the other two would be hired hands. Think how much more hay they could bring in in a day, and how much more they could fit in their barns!

Even back in the early 1900s electricity existed but only for a small percentage of the rural population.

Not a whole lot rural there, looks to be on the edge of a village.
There is one power pole with three levels of wires.
Couple of late twentys, early thirties cars in background.

Hand tie, that was not a fun job. Ours had sit down stations. The wire stuffer was behind the pickup. Very dirty job.

Too young to sit on the seat and tie (an adult job thankfully) ours was a similar case with hand fed needles. 100# bales were common. Never shut off the engine, restretch the wires in the barn on a wall channel with a grease fitting for a loop end and a welded on vicegrip for the straight! The only dirtier job was soybean harvest with our McCormick SP 125, or greasing it!!! Jim
