Richard,

Interesting, I was just wondering if that construction style is a regional thing.... as I have never seen one with those angled walls. All I gave ever seen are staight walls, in our corner of the world.

And of course, round wire cribs.

Also one concrete round crib! Had lots of air hole constructed into it.

Cute, but doesnt look like it would hold enough feed if that barn were full of livestock?

he wind in those northern states would blow those over pretty quickly once empty.

The sloped wall are very common here in Western PA. I was told as a kid that the reason for it was to help keep the rain running off the roof from blowing into the cracks in the crib.

I am glad John answered.
That makes sense.
Most of ours had straight sides, but some like that.
I recently saw a nice log crib in the mountains up in our county.
I will try to get a photo when I get back by there.

Maybe it's the chicken feed crib? Yes, that was a thing local to my part of New Jersey. For some reason, many farms around here had a little crib from which corn was shelled for a small flock of chickens on the farm, while the big cribs were reserved for grinding for the cows. Nobody has ever been able to explain why, just 'that's what they did'.

It was probably because one was built before the other. My guess would be that the smaller one came first.

I remember Grandpa telling me that when corn was picked by hand they separated the nubbins from the good ears and used them for pig feed.
