6V-8V conversion - battery post size question

I just converted my '49 8N from 6V ground (+) to 12V ground (-). The negative 12V battery posts are smaller than the positive posts, but I still have my braided ground cable that has the large hole while the positive cable has the smaller.

Are there any options other than getting new cables?

what i have done to make the large hole smaller is remove the cable clamping bolt, collapse the hole and take a hacksaw and saw out the material on the bolt area, then it has room to collapse smaller

Get a piece of 1/2inch hard copper. Cut it the same
height as the post. Polish it shiny bright, inside and
out. Slit lengthwise with a hacksaw. Clean out
battery clip and post. Tap the copper down over the
post and it will conform to taper. Now you have
plenty of range to tighten the clip.

They must make a lead cap to repair battery post because I have thrown away a few that were causing a problem. Well they do google Schumacher BAF-2 Battery Post Shims for Positive or Negative Post

Believe me they will haunt ya...

Get the correct fitting cable assy life will be good.

Just us a 31 GRP battery and then no posts needed just an eyelet and 3/8ths nut to tighten them down. No fooling around with those junk cable clamps.

Sure there are options but none of
them are smart.

When converting to 12v you need to
replace the heavy cables that are
necessary for 6v to smaller
automobile cables. You also need a
small lower CCA battery. Your
starter and ring gear needs these
two things to soften the hit of 12v
on a 6v starter.

(quoted from post at 16:02:54 11/11/22) what i have done to make the large hole smaller is remove the cable clamping bolt, collapse the hole and take a hacksaw and saw out the material on the bolt area, then it has room to collapse smaller

Worked like a charm. Dremel rather than hacksaw, basically the same.

I can't argue against it, but it's the 1st I've heard about this issue. How much reduced life of these 6V components are we talking about?

Often the shims come already installed on battery post. :)

...and the large cables are needed to support the battery!
