A man had just finished a 1949 electric start John Deere A. He went to start it for the the first time by cranking with the starter. It didn't fire. He tried pull starting it. It didn't fire. he tried belt starting it. It didn't fire. Now he was confused and called a friend. His friend took one look and said " You forgot the sparkplugs!"

Actually, they used them for electric start so if your starter fried you could still hand crank to start it. they did that with the steering wheel. you would slid it into a slot on the flywheel and spine. when it started the steering wheel fall off.

It was common to open petcocks with electric start, especially on the early styled long hood tractors, as they were 6 volt, and often times the batteries didn't have the oomph to kick over the tractor on
full compression. Especially in cold weather.

As for your joke or funny story, if in real life it would have never gotten that far. Ever crank over a two cylinder with no plugs? Once you get sprayed with gas, you'd figure it out quickly. There would be
no pulling it or belting it without figuring out the missing piece to the puzzle.

Well I have only started 2 Two-Cylinders. One was A 1929 D and the other was a unstyled A on steel. Both were owned by a guy a met at Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag, MN. He let me start both to see how they felt. The only Two-cylinder of mine is a unrestored 1943 B. As for the story, its supposed to be funny.

Lighten up Francis! Quit picking on the new guy. Why is there no sense of humor left in society. You want a joke? Aaron wears Green.

We probably have all done some pretty silly things. More than once I have hand started my '36 A without
opening the right hand petcock. Didn't even realize it until it started and I went around to close it and
found that I had forgot to open it. Have also done that with the fuel shut off finally dawned on me after
cranking more than it should have taken. But..... forgetting to replace the spark plugs.... that is funny but
probably didn't really happen. Kinda like our old neighbor's tale about the time in his earlier years a
neighbor pitching silage down the chute of his upright silo looked up and saw the clouds moving by and thought
the silo was falling over and jumped down the chute.
