1650 oliver timing

Hey guys I bought a 1650 Oliver diesel. The guy before me put a brand new injection pump on it from industrial injection. Well it still won t run. Runs a few seconds on ether then dies. I have the two marks lined up on the pump by turning the crankcase pulley with a socket. We have fuel coming from everywhere. When it did try to start(before I had the marks lined up) it would smoke white. Any ideas? Thanks
 
White smoke means fuel is getting past injectors, but compression heat is too low OR timing is off OR both. Which engine? The early 1650 is the anergy
cell diesel, and late engine is direct injected diesel. Pump MIGHT be 180 degrees off as it turns one half engine speed. Pull the valve cover, turn
crank to TDC and watch the number SIX rocker arms. Rock the crank back and forth and see that the number SIX rockers move as this will confirm number
ONE is on compression stroke. If I recall flywheel should be at 4 degrees BTDC when the pump marks align but check the service book. If the pump marks
align but the number ONE rockers move then pump IS 180 degrees off. Also make sure the intake manifold heater works as engine won't start well cold
without it. DO NOT use ether WITH the heater, use one or the other but NOT both together.

It s is the direct injection since the injectors are above the manifold.
 
The engine has to have # one cylinder at
top dead center on the compression stroke
when the timing marks are lined up in the
injector pump window. There is a timing
cover on the right hand of the engine
which when removed lets you see the TDC
mark on the flywheel. You need to verify
that #1 is on the compression stroke by
watching the rocker arms when rotating the
crankshaft or else checking for
compression with a gauge or your thumb on
the #1 injector hole. Factory spec for timing is 4 deg BTDC.
 
Also on the injector pump driveshaft there
is a tang which fits into a corresponding
slot in the pump. There is a dot stamped
into the end of driveshaft tang and also
the slot in the pump. When installing the
pump, these two dots must be lined up or
timing will be 180 out and the engine
won't start. Please correct me if I am
wrong on that Dieseltech.
 

Ok sounds like I basically need to pull the injection pump off and see what is going on and make sure it s aligned and then be very careful putting it to not roll an umbrella seal
 
Don't pull the pump, just remove the drive gear bolts on the pump drive and turn the hub as needed to get the pump marks aligned with the cam and
crank correct location. Even if the dots DON'T align you can get the engine to run IF it's timed correctly. This assumes the PUMP has the internal weight cage mark is correct also.
 
Found that with a rebuilt Pump on a 1256 that the farmer supplied . Plum drove me nuts . Do you know what a pain it is to remove the valve cover to make dead sure your on TDC at night in a field .
 
Ok guys I took the gear drive cover off and the 2 bolts and was able to spin the shaft to get the timing marks align in the window. The key way on the crank was pointed up and I believe it was on TDC. Tried to start and it just smokes but won t fire. Fuel coming in and out from the pump and to the injectors. Any ideas? Thanks
