So a week or so ago I started my late 1950 8N that had been parked for long time. Back then I could only get it in 2nd 4th and reverse. Today I used to for about and hour with the backhoe it has on it. Got ready to move it and figured I would try 1st and 3rd gear. It went into both so I guess the oil got to where it needed to be to free up what ever was rusted up

This tractor was under water part of the way on May 5th of this year so things got wet. I drained things but didn't use it up till a week or so ago. By running it oil has now gotten to places that had been able to rust up so it now works. Seen this happen to more the one tractor over the years

I suspect you're right, rust in the top of the transmission.

I've looked in some that were NASTY!!

There is probably still some water in it, at least enough to condense up and drip down on everything.

Not all that long ago I cracked open all 3 drain plugs and let a good bit of the water that was in it out and also added a quart or 2 of ATF to help things
