I'm needing to pull the engine on my long backhoe.

the books I have tell me to pull the engine and funk automatic transmission as one unit. my question is why when there appears to be enough room to separate the engine from the transmission and lift it out.
would there be anybody that I could talk to about this.

any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated

Thank you Jerry

I don't under stand. This foreign odd ball stuff is bought because it is cheap cost wise then no parts support and no dealers to get parts. No service backup. Is it really that much cheaper in the long run this way? I don't walk I run away from this stuff so I'm not in a position where I can't get parts or service or both if I need. As for your long I don't see why it would make any sense to pull both.

What type of transmission is it, a standard dry clutch, or a torque
converter?

If a torque converter, can you disconnect it from the engine and leave it
in the transmission?

That may be the issue, but just a wild guess.

That was very helpful..........

it has no clutch it has a one speed Funk automatic for a shuttle transmission. yes there is a torque converter.

my thinking is if I pull the engine and shuttle transmission together then put it on the floor and remove the starter to get to the torque converter bolts why can't I just remove the starter get to the torque converter bolts and leave the torque converter and the shuttle transmission in the machine?
if I can separate them on the shop floor I feel I should be able to separate them in the machine. Jerry

oil goes everywhere, damage tc seals might be why or ease to unbolt tc from flywheel. be heck to work hard to learn why didnt i follow directions?

99 Mercury Cougar, book said (basically) remove a lot of the right front suspension to get the alternator out.

Spent an hour and a half trying to prove them wrong before I pulled a lot of the right front suspension and got the alternator out

I pulled the 440 engine from a 67 chrysler by splitting the tranny like I did with
others. It was tight but came out. Later I was looking in a manuel & it said to pull
it with the tranny. It went back in OK too.

hey all. after some looking I was able to find the shortcut and leave the automatic in place with the torque converter.
as far as parts for this engine and machine all parts are still readily available you just have to know where to look and what to ask for. and again thank you all for your help and insight. Jerry

Ford Super Duty is a modern example. You pull the cab to work on the engine. It's DESIGNED to be removed by a trained mechanic in under 2 hours so that you have complete and full access to everything that's stuffed into that engine compartment. The alternative is bending your arms into unnatural shapes and formulating a complete vocabulary of new swear words.
