Valve cover gasket- farmall b

Thanks to all that commented on my last post about no spark. She is now running.

The next issue at hand is a leaky valve cover gasket. I am looking for guidance on the process.

Thanks in advance.

Not much to putting on a new one other then having to pull the hood off. I use a small amount of silicone gasket marker to hold the gasket in place, note I say SMALL amount. While you have the valve cover off it never hurts to check the gap on the tappets

I did inframe overhauls of 2 Farmall C's this summer. I attached the new valve cover gasket to the valve cover with Permatex. I can't remember which type of Permatex it was - just the black thick stuff. Indian Head is another similar gasket sealer in a bottle with a swab. I put a nice layer of Permatex on the surface and placed the new gasket on that surface while alining all of the bolt holes. Once it was all lined up and bonded somewhat (5 minutes) I flipped it over on a smooth level surface and slightly weighted the valve cover. Before I left to let it dry I did recheck alinement of the bolt holes in the valve cover to the bolt holes in the gasket. When I put the valve cover on the head I did not seal the head to the gasket surface - that way the valve cover can be taken off to retorque the head bolts after a good warm up and in the future to check the valve/rocker arm clearance.

When I made my living as an auto mechanic in the 70s and 80s all the shops I worked at used the yellow 3m super weather strip adhesive part no 8001 to glue the gasket to the valve cover and nothing on the head side. Lay the flange of the valve cover on the edge of the work bench with the valve cover upside down and tap the bolt holes back flat with a hammer before sticking the gasket to the cover. Put a small strip of adhesive on the valve cover flange and press gasket in place then pull gasket off and wave it in the air for a few seconds then put the gasket back on in the right position because it will stick where you put it. I don't know if they even make the adhesive anymore.

the bolt holes, ive put sewing thread in them ,tie ends together through gasket and cover to keep alignment tighten just nuff to hold in place till installed on head bolts loose cut thread remove n tighten. oh yes i use a light coat of gun grease on head side makes removal a snap n dont destroy gasket later on.
however that b ihc only has studs in middle of head too
