We hated to do it....

Yesterday morning we had our old cat put to sleep.

She was a 14 year old spayed female. She wasn't a house cat, she lived in the garage and rarely left the garage anymore.

She was a mess lately. She couldn't/wouldn't groom herself anymore and looked like heck. She was diabetic, or something, and drank huge quantities of water and peed accordingly, sometimes not making it to her litter box. Even though we had a heated pad for her to sleep on in the garage, I hated to think of subjecting her to another cold winter in the garage.

So, we took her to a vet and did what we needed to do. Life marches on.

It's tough but you did the right thing. Old cats, old dogs, old horses all have a way of getting to you. Peace

Sorry to hear.

Had to have my last dog put down, that was 10 tears ago, I still miss her and have vivid dreams about her!

Its tough all right, but you did the right thing. It's never an easy decision. I have gone through it a lot of times. Like you said time marches on. Stan

Yep same here...not my cat but the company barn cat had to be taken to the vet earlier in October to be put down...she couldn't walk anymore...all I can say about knowing her for a year or so is that it was a blessing to have known her. She smart as whip right up to the end, friendly to friends, and didnt waste time with people that ignored her. My boss cat Sassy....

well Goose here's the pic..she's blessing me out for being late that day. The image was taken summer of 2021.

It is tough loosing a furry friend. My wife's favorite cat, Soybean had to be put down due to cancer. It was tough to do, but I did not want to put him through some huge medical effort to prolong his life just a little more.

I never was a cat guy. Partiality to dogs was my habit and not much bondage there. About 10 years ago I acquired a Siamese Cat, bonded and due to an internal problem had him put down. I cried too. Never in my life thought I'd bond with a cat, much less cry at its funeral. Took him home and shovel dug his grave.

Thank you for (1) giving her 14 years of love and care, (2) having her spayed, (3) giving her years of freedom to roam outside as cats are designed to do, and (4) putting her down when the time came.

I have endured the deaths of dozens of cats from my earliest childhood days to the current era. I haven't had to add any to my pet cemetery in the last few years, but I have some rescues that are getting up in years. Every fall I make sure I have a couple of bags of charcoal and cans of lighter fluid to thaw graves if a pet dies in January, when the frost in the ground can make digging a grave impossible without artificial thawing.

Thanks again for doing the right things for your cat.

I know what you mean, I've been there. Although for me I've loved cats since I was a kid. I have two now, and I feel guilty sometimes that I don't spend as much time with them as they'd like--given I'll probably outlive them. Lately I've taken this into consideration and if they come around while I'm in the middle of a bunch of work I'll stop if the work can wait--even though it's what puts food in their bowls.
"Ok, let's take a walk down to the stream," I'll tell them and they know exactly where we're going and head for the woods. They never let me get too far ahead and I often see them single file crossing a small ditch on a fallen tree. They once followed me across the stream on a big log but that one has been washed away now. I try to give them as much of my time as possible so I have no regrets later. My big orange tabby just jumped up to see what I was doing as I wrote this. I guess it's time for a walk down to the stream. Gerrit
