4DLT Battery

Bought a ford 5600 in nov 78. Traded it in on a caseih cx90 in march of 99. I had replaced the battery in the ford 2 times. The 4dlt were excellent batteries.

Weak batteries are good of selling more starters and alternators.
Not enough juice to crank the engine over fast enough anymore so more strain on the starter, then the alt works harder to charge up a weak battery. Weak batteries save you money today and can bite you tomorrow.

We had a JD Strongbox last over 12 years in our JD4600, but that's the best we've done. Last spring I replaced the original one in a 2013 Chev Silverado, 9 years and still going, but I didn't want it to fail 100 miles up in Canada on a fishing trip. 6 years is about average, depending on how you treat them, heat is what shortens their life. The one in our JD4600 is parked in an unheated garage on the CA border for 5 months in the winter, no maintainer on it, I don't believe in them.

About 3 years is all I could get out of them so I convert them to a automotive battery with a 42 mo warranty. Life is good.

I am 9 years on my bota original battery it sure sounds weak now days. Can I push it for another year maybe so. My mower battery still cranked after 5 years I can tell it does not spin up as good as new.

My ears tell they are not as efficient as they should be the mower got a new bat as soon as I get time the bota will also.

When I go to mow are use the bota fudgen with a jumper is not in my plan. I sell batteries when I pull your car in 50% of the time I can tell form the sound of the starter the bat is headed south. It seams every time I have been stuck in the middle of no where the bat died and I knew it was weak and on its way out : (

Selling more starters and alternators will help weak batteries.
The starter has to work harder since there isn't enough power to turn the engine over quickly, and the alternator has to work harder to charge a weak battery. You can save money today, but weak batteries may cost you later.

You're doing better than I ever got out of a 4dlt.

Switched over to (I think) group 65 automotive batteries in my Ford thousand series tractors.
But about that time I also started getting rid of the Lucas generators and installing alternators with tach drives.
Believe the alternators do a better job keeping the batteries charged/topped off.

So I'm getting 6-7 years out of tractor batteries now.

Might do just as well if I stuck a 4DLT back in them, but what I have is working.

I got just over 18 years on the one in my Ford 4500 probably because whenever it is not in use it sits on a desulphater.

I never had aroblem with the Lucas electriciy system. The 4dlt was what the 5000 gas took, the 4000 gas took a smaller battery

I quit using 4DLTs.
I generally get my batteries at Fleet Farm and because the 4dlts are considered for commercial applications they only give you a 1 year warranty on them. I have had a couple of them go bad after about 1 1/2 years.
PS,
Saw your post above about the new cables.
Nice job!
I just made a set like that last week out of some welding cable and solder-on ends. Even used the shrink tubing on them like you did.
They will probably outlast me.
