Sealing Muffler Stack Connection

Hi Guys,

I get exhaust fumes blown into my face. The muffler on my Ford 5000 is rmovable, it's simply inserted into the exhaust pipe from the top. I suspect that the fumes from that pipe-to-muffler connection.

Is there a way to seal that connection? I don't want it to be permanent, though.

Amazon sells fiberglass exhaust wrap for motorcycles (https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=exhaust+heat+wrap&i=automotive&ref=nb_sb_noss). Has anybody tried it for this purpose?

Thanks,
Jaroslav

Auto parts stores have selections of pipe to pipe couplings and clamps. Most muffler to pipe connections are on the outside of the pipe to both shed water and provide a good seal. the pipes should fit (and have a modestly tightened clamp to make a better seal). Muffler shops can provide expanded couplings to exact size with tools to stretch or shrink tubing. Don't live with the leak, it might shorten your experience base. Jim

must have wrong muffler, they never go inside the pipe.restrics air flow, increases water in exhaust and blasts you with fumes

Hi Jaroslav

The thousand series Fords have a short outer shroud as well as the inner pipe that goes into and over the pipe end of the exhaust manifold. Just replaced the one on my 5000 and it sounds like you have the wrong part. Had an exhaust shop fabricate one for a 3000 years ago, they work well. Water can't run down the exhaust and into the manifold with the correct set up.

I have the same thing on my Case however it's made to put a clamp on it but I don't want one. I often cover the tractor with a tarp and remove the smoke stack when I do. At first it blew
smoke at me but I cleaned the inside of the muffler to where it fit better and it doesn't smoke anymore.

I will ad the stack may be too short. I cut 4 inches off of mine(super c) to get it in the house garage one winter and it noe blows in my face and did not before.

Here is an update on the situation.

I took the hood off yesterday and indeed: the mufler sits loose on the pipe; it's all covered in soot. The fumes escape where the arrow is pointing at.

Somebody suggested that I put a clamp to squeeze it down to the inner pipe's size. The question is would I be able to squeeze it just about the right amount so that (a) it remains removable, and (b) it doesn't pass the fumes through?

So, the related question: should I spend extra on a [i:c4caf0bda4]fancy[/i:c4caf0bda4] clamp that has a bigger contact area, such as these:

The top clamp is the total wrong one. It's for automotive applications and need to be welded to the pipe. It would never hold up to a vertical muffler on a tractor. First tree branch would wipe it out.

A simple u-bolt style muffler clamp is all you need.

I'm concerned that a simple 2-dollar clamp would squeeze the outer pipe along a very narrow line. If I squeeze to much it would create a channel in both the outer pipe and the inner pipe, which would be great if I wanted to attach them permanently.

But I'd like to keep it removable.

This is exactly my situation. I don't normally remove the muffler during the storage, but I must do it in order to be able to remove the hood of the tractor.

How many pieces of pipe do you use beyond the clamp?
Looks like two?

I would eliminate the extra pipes and use one clamp like the sheet metal one you have posted. Those can be had to join same size pipe or two different sizes.
