IH 660 split

How hard is it to split an IH 660 to work on a clutch? Would it be better to have a good mechanic do it? What would one expect for the cost? It does not have a TA, if that would make a difference.

The answer to that question is your skill level with wrenches and confidence you can do it right with some information from your service book. A 66 is a fair sized tractor so your going to need some decent splitting stands for one side or the other.

i can split them easily in one hr. block the rear and roll the front ahead with my overhead hoist. nothing hard very easy tractors to work on. but dont know your level of expertize. wow a 660 with no TA , is that from factory? i have 8 of them and never saw one without it.

Splitting a tractor, especially without a cab, is not that difficult. It is just time and common skills. To do it safely work only on pavement. Block the front in place with a stand. I split my NFE Ford 9000 a few times by bolting angle stock into the structural oil pan and a four foot long 8x8, then cribbing up to it. The rear is rolled by supporting the center housing with a wheeled trailer jack bolted rigidly to the side with an adequate fabricated bracket. The large tires give you leverage to push it back and with three rigid support points it is going nowhere.

If you have access to the right equipment to do it, it's not bad.

If you are trying to do it with a Harbor Freight cherry picker and floor jacks, it will probably end in disaster.

On flat concrete in a decent building, tolerable.

On dirt outside this time of year, miserable.

As you have not provided us with any information regarding your level of experience, what kind of tools you are working with, and where you are working, the answers will be all over the board.
